Is pogoplug going to come out with a model that is USB 3.0?  I've updated my computer and I now run USB3 and I would love to see the speed of the pogoplug increase to that.  Most of my externals are USB3 however they are backwards compatable to USB2

USB3 is the wave of the future as most i7 machines also run USB3.  I'm not sure if USB3 would or would not increase the speed when sharing with a friend over the net.   Any clue?  If your in the works with one let me know if you need a beta tester ;)

Unless your internet pipe is the size of the Chunnel I don't think USB3 is going to help speeds that are not on your LAN. Even on your LAN you might not see a difference especially for wireless access.

Of course having the option of USB3 would be great provided a) it didn't cost any more and b) it actually accomplishes anything. Since USB relies on the CPU (I assume that's still true for USB3) it could actually be a negative for a low power device although I doubt the CPU is taxed much at all right now.

I look forward to hearing from someone "in the know" on this subject however.

Actually it doesn't affect the CPU or the RAM.  Its also really not a expensive upgrade to do on one's computer.  Here I wrote a thread on my geek site how to do it cheaply if your interested in it:  http://geekdrop.com/content/how-to-upgrade-your-computer-to-usb-30 I can tell you there is no negative in it just lighting speeds. My USB3 is a PCIe add in card and uses minimal cpu cycles, my computer is also a quad core with 8GB of RAM so no drain.

I do think that transferring files to the pogoplug might be much faster with the USB3 but I can't tell you for sure since I've never tried it.  As for it helping with the sharing speeds your probably right there but my best friend who I share with (or will be) is on a OC 8  line so yeah kinda like a tunnel, not the average connection. It would just be a nice option and one I thought I would ask and yes I'm a hardware geek. Laughing

USB3 sure when it gets here it will be cool but how about a technology that is widely available like eSATA? I mean come on eSATA is a no brainier.

Ok I agree eSATA would also be nice.  USB3 has been available for about 6 months and will become more and more used as time goes on.  However I do agree a eSATA port would be nice.  Laughing

If they (pogoplug) are going to go to the expense of a redesign I'd say just wait for Light Peak and be done with it. Intel says it will make the technology available late this year and expects partners to start shipping devices with it next year.

It would be nice to have just one cable for everything.
