Does any body know how to telnet to the Pogoplug from Internet?

It does work within the LAN by issuing the command telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

My router support the port forwarding for the telnet service, but apparently to telnet the Pogoplug there's no port to specify? How do I then setup the telnet from internet, when I'm not at home?

Thanks

You probably don't want to set up telnet from the internet. If you can do it, then anyone can do it from the internet. The login and password are readily available if you haven't changed the password. If you have changed the password then it is transmitted as plain text for any snooper to read. Ssh would give you a lot more security and you can specify the port to open. PuTTY is an ssh client that you can use on your remote computer. PuTTY is free and available for all popular OS's

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. Your suggestion on SSH makes sense, but the problem, to my understanding is still there.

The only way I know for forwarding an ssh request to the Pogoplug from a computer outside the LAN is through port forwarding, through my router. As for telnet, I need to specify a port. Which port? When I ssh to Pogoplug within the LAN, I do not have to specify any port.

Anyway, does anybody know any way, other the port forwarding, to ssh to Pogoplug from Internet?
Thanks.

The short answer: you need to use port forwarding for telnet as well as ssh. By default, Telnet servers listen on TCP port 23.

The long answer:
Traffic originating from outside your LAN must go through your router. Your router needs to know where to send the data when it receives the data. The router uses port forwarding to determine where to send the data. Traffic originating from inside the LAN and going to the internet (e.g. a browser) is handled by the router without port forwarding because it knows where the data came from.

The Pogoplug is able work without port forwarding as it maintains a link from within the LAN to my.pogoplug.com.

If you've got a dynamically-assigned IP address from your ISP (as most home DSL customers have -- perhaps, also, cable modem users) then you can sign up with a service such as DynDNS (http://www.dyndns.com) (there are others). With this service you choose a domain name using one of their suffixes, e.g., pfal.homeip.net, and you run some software at your end that periodically updates the DynDNS server with your current IP address. My Netgear WiFi router (RangeMax WPN824) has this function built-in. You can also use a package like inadyn running in your PogoPlug to do this. It's all pretty easy to set up, and it does what you want: from anywhere you can specify your chosen domain name for a http or ssh or scp connection, and (if you've got the right port forwarding enabled in your router) you're talking to your PogoPlug. Watch for the security holes!

We definitely don't recommend using Telnet, and the firmware being pushed out starting tonight disables Telnet on the Pogoplug. SSH will be disabled by default, however a new Security tab has been added to the Settings page where you can enable SSH and also set the password.

If SSH and Telnet are disabled, how does one access to the Pogoplug for, eg, installing new applications?

From your answer, the command for accessing the Pogoplug from a (not home) network, would be ssh root@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:23, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is my public IP (that, btw, is kept fixed by my ISP). Is that correct?

Accessing outside of home means getting a DynDNS URL, forwarding port 21 on your router to your Pogoplug's IP, and enabling SSH in the security settings. Then, to connect, you would use "ssh root@yourdnsurl.dyndns.com"

one would think that the MyPogoplug would have that information since it
is connected to the Pogoplug device. so, what about it Pogoplug folks - could
you give us info, say via the Settings page ?

thanks.

Hello, I've just bought a Pogoplug, model: POGO-e02 and try to get it running with my Netgear WPN824. I connected everything, but the led is staying orange and is not turning to green. Also my router doesn't list the pogoplug in the "attached devices". I've tried another network cable, but nothing changed. Can you give me more advice?

greetings from the Netherlands!

EDIT: fixed it: upgraded the router with new firmware.
