Hello!

I've been considered buying the PogoPlug primarily for it's ability to share and stream video files. I have a friend who watches the same shows as I do, and since I have a ton of video files I would like them to be able to watch them as well.

But I want to know what the quality and streaming speed is like with video files. I know I will have to convert most of the files to .mov (they are all .avi or .mkv currently). Is the width/height of the video reduced when streaming? Is there a full screen option? My current files are about 350MB, but I also have a few 720p .mkv files that are 1.1GB.

If anyone is willing to share a direct link to a video file for me, that would be awesome as well (but I understand if not. "Trust" and "Internet" aren't two words I use together in a positive sense often).

Thanks for any help and tips you can provide.

Pogoplug will automatically transcode common video formats to h.264 so they can be played over the web and iPhone, and the quality is set at a rate that most high-speed home internet connections can handle. Ultimately, however, the quality of the video will depend on your upload bandwidth. You can transcode to any quality and play them remotely (or share them) as long as your bandwidth permits. Are you on Cable, DSL, ...? Do you know what your upload speed is?

I have Comcast Cable, and according to SpeedTest.net:

Closest Available Server to my home:
Download, 21.16 Mbps
Upload, 3.15 Mbps

Closest Server to where my friend is located:
Download, 16.27 Mbps
Upload, 2.62 Mbps

Thanks for the quick reply!

does anyone know if the transcode is real time, or an actual conversion. If one uploads video to the pgp, and then it transcodes, is the original video still intact? I would like to have the video available in original format for future download.

The second thing I seem to be seeing is, this transcode process takes a long time. If one tries to access a video either on iphone or web in ADVANCE of the transcode completing, then it times out and cannot be restarted again.

Something happens to MP4 files on the download that prevents them from playing properly in QuickTime and/or iTunes. Very weird. Files are good going up AND I can open them from the Pogoplug drive with QT and it's all good. But download and try to play 'em they stutter, stop and audio gets out of sync.

Big mystery.

@tivoboy - the transcode process does take some time - it often runs at about 6-10 frames per second, depending on the video. It actually generates the transcode as a file in .cedata (hidden file on your hard drive).

@Norm - are you still having this problem? Definitely contact support if you are - that's not something I've heard of yet.

thanks for the reply,

no matter, it's UN plugged as it is, the iomega product is working much better - and the goodreader app on the iphone and ipad is so killer that transcode works great - with a pc host.

Where does the transcode take place? On the pogoplug's CPU?

If I were to upload a feature-film in DivX format I imagine that a transcode at 6fps could take a very long time.

Part of my work involves the production of HD video. We mostly create it in H264 by default. A 8 minute HD video will be about 250Mb. Would other pogoplug sharing partners be able to receive the exact same files as I store or would they get the transcoded smaller versions of the file?

Also, supposing I were to store a bunch of work videos on a Pogoplug at work. Would these videos become available on my home Pogoplug? Would I be able to view the shared video on my XBox 360?

Does the pogoplug really transcode .MKV files? If so, I haven't seen it. Maybe I need a firmware upgrade.
