I'm new to the whole PogoPlug experience and was hoping someone had an alternate option to transcoding videos. Currently a full length video is taking hours, numerous hours.  Is there a way to transcode the files on a PC first then store them to the pogoplug while leaving the originals intact? Basically the same process the PogoPlug performs but done by a higher end MAC/PC.

 Regards,

@Outlander088

We've had good experiences using a program called handbrake to transcode videos.

After you select the file to transcode, select iphone and ipod touch on the right side menu, then tick the checkbox for web friendly H.264

If you go this route, you'd likely prefere turning off the Pogoplug's transcoding process on the media settings page on my.pogoplug.com

Thanks Chris, I'll give it a try.

Has anyone got Handbrake app to work? -I can't.
A movie takes 10 hours to transcode! (and I have 4 CPU cores).

To clarify-Handbrake works, but my Pogoplug still wants to transcode the file after I processed the file as described in Handbrake.
The Pogoplug takes 10 hours to transcode a movie that is an AVI file!

You can turn off the transcoding in Pogoplug buy going to Media Settings on the MYPogoplug.com web page. When you use Pogoplug, you just access the MP4 or M4v files that you have uploaded to pogoplug.

You still have your original AVI/MPG or whatever format you had originally. However you now have another format that is web friendly.

With that said, I think Pogoplug does have some severe limitations in streaming files. I've notice that on my MAC and iPhone, streaming is a hit and miss process. It doesn't matter if I'm on my local LAN or connected remotely sitting in a hotel. My PC seems to stream better but still has its problems.

I found a free program called Any Video Converter that works at super speed compared to these other options. You can also set it to do multiple files. Just save them as mp4s. Tried them out and they play well.

I've found its easier just to download the file and watch it locally. The trans-coding process is impossibly slow. I have over 22000 files that are currently being trans-coded, and I anticipate it seems it will take in excess of a year to complete. Plus, the trans-coding slows down the already slow access speeds to the pogoplug.

I am probably going to give up on the on the fly transcoding on my pgp pro. great idea but poorly executed. the hardware doesn;t handle it too well either. I guess I could use handbrake to convert the video although I didn;t want to to that.

part of the confusion out there is that most videos I have are in avi format(they are half the size of other formats)but in the case of Android phones, the default Video player can only read h.264 and MP4/MKV. the transcoding would be helpful if it worked reliably because it seems to allow these non standard formats to play in the free default player.

one solution is to download an alternate video player and make that your default. I have been using vPlayer as it supports AVI files. other than constantly buffering, it seems to work for me.
