I have 3TB attached including all of the digital photos I've taken in the last 10 years as well as a bunch of large HD TiVo movies and had about 50,000 items as well. I set everything to "never" when Samba stopped working and rebooted. It seems to be working fine now. I don't think the scanning is worth the extra overhead. FYI I have a DockStar.

After watching my HD's light flash off/on for a few hours I thought I would look into My.Pogoplug settings and see what may be happening.
Looking at the media settings and it says there are 50,852 items pending processing.
So for now I just truned it off.
Anyone else see this huge a number? I only have 154GB of data on this drive.

Ya, I think there is a bug somewhere. I tried a couple other scans and although it looked like it started out right as time went my the items to be processed again grew way out of hand.
I will contact support@pogo soon as I can do a some very specific tests to determine exactly how to duplicate.

The scan basically creates the database entries for each one of your files, and marks images and video for thumbnail creation and transcode. Personally I wouldn't turn off the scan because the My Media and Show My Files depend on it for searching.
The pending items are all those that need to scanned, thumbnail (images and video) creation and video transcoding. Images will thumbnail reasonably quickly, and video transcode will take a pretty sizable amount of time.
The reason the queue grows is that as the scan progresses it finds more things to do - I've had drives with several hundred gigs require several days to finish doing their thing (hundreds of thousands of files).
That said, we have introduced some new options in the web ui to give you a little more control over the process - check out the release notes (http://pogoplug.com/downloads/web_relnotes.html - I've also copied them below
v2.0.1
We've added the following new features to the website in this point release:
Media Settings
In Media Options, Allow Pogoplug Enabled Device to optimize videos for playback, you now have three options:
* Never - The Pogoplug Enabled Device will play the original video file and will generate neither web-optimized 10 second preview nor the web-optimzed full video.
* Auto-Generate Preview - The Pogoplug Enabled Device will create a web-optimized 10 second preview of each movie. If you preview the 10 second preview the Pogoplug Enabled Device will queue the full video to be web-optimized.
* Auto-Generate Full Transcode - The Pogoplug Enabled Device will create a web-optimized version of the full video.
Media Settings
We've added a new link "Click here to see videos eligible for a full-transcode". The dialog box that pops up will allow you to select any or all of your videos to be fully transcoded to the web optimized version. Prior to this, previewing the short transcode (10 seconds of video) by clicking the magnifying glass to play your video or hovering over the video to play in thumbnail view were the only ways to trigger the whole file to be optimized.
My Media / Show My Files
Both of these searches will now by default NOT search your shared folders. If you click the new share icon (Include files that are shared with me) next to My Media and Show My Files it will turn green, and content shared to you will be included in your search results.
Bug Fixes
These bugs are fixed in this release:
* Bug 1286 - Viewing the short preview of a clip that is currently being transcoded restarts the process from 0%
* Bug 1294 - Switching to List view while in My Music / Albums takes you to the My Music / Songs
Known Issues
These are known issues with the Web App that have not been addressed in this release:
* Bug 1203 - Shared photos from a directory do not show up in photos filter
* Bug 1210 - MP3 file with corrupt AlbumArt will not playback through the webapp
* Bug 1287 - Transcode queue will not show 2nd file if it was added while a current file is being transcoded
hope that helps!

Thanks for the explanation. I still don't see how there could be 50K plus of files/items ,that need scanned, on that particular HD. But will play with the settings some more.
BTW, I would love to be able to see the transcoded files somewhere easily. I might be able to use those files on other devices when I can't use the original ones. Might save me some time trasncoding them when I in fact already have one.

I re-enabled scanning for thumbnails, but once again WFS stopped working. I disabled it and rebooted, and all is fine again.
Got 2.0.1...I've got maybe 40GB of data on it and 0 movies, yet it continuously scans the hard drive (WD My Book Essential 1TB) even after I unchecked all the checkboxes and such.
I recently got my Pogoplug V2 (pink) and love it. One thing I would like to know why is the light in the front is constantly blinking for the last 3 days or so. Is this becuade it is creating those thumnails etc. I've openpgo installed on a USD drive and uploaded about 80GB of photo's and videos. Your feedback is appreciated.
Just got my Pogoplug today and I am going to test out the scan for everyone. Starting today at 2.52pm (CST) I started my scan.
Several hours later and this seems to be working for me. I am now counting down the list of 52k+ items pending and generating meta data.
After doing this research http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/12683/Transcoded-videos-which-ones-An... your post makes me wonder what would happen if the HD got full while transcoding videos.
Would it error out, give you some kind of message or just what?

IDK Brandon. Last I check I was scanning again, but I had made some progress.
shortly 30 minutes after stating I was processing meta data I was back to scanning. I am not looking at 169k+ files.
and I thought I would make one last post as it looks like I am again processing the data. 191k+ items, but it looks like the process is working.
One of the things I noticed is that most of the thousands of items being processed for me are internet temporary files. Our computers here back up daily to pogoplug activated drives. Most of those have internet temporary files (thousands of JPG and PNG files) included in them, including pics from all sites everybody at the company browsed to (scary, hunh?).
We don't use media access on the one at work, so I have tried to turn it off because it really kills anybody trying to access files on the shared drives. It always seems to be processing though.
@Rhoadrunner - have you tried setting all the Media settings to "Never"? If you click the "settings" link next to your Pogoplug name in the Media Settings Tab you should get a dialog box called "Media Processing Options", with three toggles for each attached drive:
Allow Pogoplug to optimize videos for playback:
Allow Pogoplug to process media meta-data:
Allow Pogoplug to generate thumbnails:
set them all to never and the Pogoplug will still scan, but should no longer process those files. The scan takes a lot less time and should be less of an interference with people trying to access the files.
Hope that's helpful!
I checked all three drives with "Never" and still get it processing. Right now it's down to 109 items pending processing. If click "Stop" on the one processing... it just goes down to 108 and keeps going.
Also checked "Never" on these drives before. It must default to other than Never and reset when I eject and reload the drive.
I did that 45 minutes ago... and I'm still getting the message about Media stuff is being processed and the system will be slow... which it is. There really needs to be a way to cancel that, even if you DO want it to happen eventually. There are times that you must use the drives at full speed without the processing killing it.
There also needs to be a way to prevent specific file types and folders from being scanned or generate thumbnails/previews for. For example I have some folders with some documents, some in PDF some in JPG file format. I don't need thumbnails for those folders.
Also, for photos, I really only want my .JPG file types to show up. I don't need .BMP, .TIFF, etc files scanned and thumbnailed.
Again, there should be settings to include/exclude folders and file types from the scan.
I plugged a 1TB WD MyBook HD i nthe Pogoplug. I unchecked everything in the media settings, even the 'use HTML5' checkboxes because I never use the web interface. I only use the option zo have the pogoplugged devices show up like other hard drives in my Finder.
I have 500GB of pictures, movies and documents (backup files) on my WD MyBook HD and even if I unchecked all the options it's now scanning since three days. But everytime I check, it tells me that it's only scanning for 15 hours or so. Does scanning restarts after finishing?
I'm a little bit disappointed. Any help?
Thanks
Here's the response I got from tech support when I let them know that even unplugging, resetting, deleting the media index files, rebooting the PP, loading the drives one at a time and switching them to Never... I still get the media processing notices and the system runs extremely slowly while the processing happens:
"Paul
The Pogoplug will still scan your hard drive for new files when they're added, but not process them if the media settings options are set at 'never.'
That's the message for when the Pogoplug is scanning the hard drive. Sorry there isn't a way around this. "
