Ha - I had a feeling somebody would beat me to the "2.0 firmware is out" post :)
I haven't tried streaming video yet, but the other functions work fine. I'll pass this on to Cloud Engines.
Also note that the upgrade is not "complete," when the drive application is updated next week, more features (like media synchronization) will become available. Not sure if the video issue has anything to do with that, let's wait for an official response.

Hi,
i just noticed that on my iphone all videos only showed up to be 10 seconds long.
I thought it was a problem with the new iPhone app, so i checked my.pogoplug.com from my Laptop and it now says version 2.0! with some new options.
Unfortunately also over the web only the first 10 seconds play..any video (i transcoded all my videos into mp4 for the iphone)
I tried the videos I have and it did it for me to. However, I think the 10 sec. is it creating a video preview, and then it gets queued with the rest of your media files to go through some transcoding..
Kind of annoying that it requires the user to try to view it for it to build the preview, if the rest of your files are already batched to be "previewed" shouldn't the videos just be part of the batch?
@begunfx
Glad you figured out how transcoding works.
We did it this way so as not to use system resources without user control.
After you trigger full transcode of your movie, it happens very quickly and you can view trancoding progress by going into Settings>tab>media and choosing the settings button in this sub-menu. Meta-Tag indexing and Thumbnail generation progress are also available in this view.

Heya Christopher,
yeah, I figured it out, but I think a lot of people might be confused by the process. Also, I have a quick feedback re: thumbnails. It would be great if the user could specify an amount of time into their movies to do the thumbnail OR allow users to define it per movie. Problem with the thumbnails now is that it uses the first 10 seconds of the clip/movie. If it's a full movie, then all you get is black and maybe the studio logo. Kind of useless..
Just my .02$
Oh, one more thing. You say that the full transcoding happens quickly. Are you referring to a short clip? Cause I have some full length movies on my server, and it's taking a long time to do. I bet a lot of users have full length movies, and will be experiencing the same..
Nice, it seems my web interface got upgraded but my drive is not available. Pogoplug 1.0.0.1, UI Version: 2.0.0, Service Version: LINUX connect-server - 2.0.0 and I can see the drive in Settings with correct size/usage. But back in Library the spinning thing only shows and never actually loads the drive.
Why do I have Pogoplug 1.0.0.1? It's the older brick plug.

When I restored my system it was at version 1.0.0.1 until the automatic upgrade occurred sometime in the middle of the night. Check again and see if it's stil at 1.0.0.1.
When you say "After you trigger full transcode of your movie, it happens very quickly"....I think this means about 30 seconds. My 143 MB short clip of a home movie is at 8 min and 60% during the "transcoding process". I haven't even tried one of my movies (I converted all of my movies to .mp4 so they were available on my iphone), how long will it take?!?! My generation needs instant gratification, no more waiting!! (just kidding, but it kind of sucks that I was able to view my movies using the app just fine and now after the update, I can't...)
UPDATE: On first movie, 1 hr 29 min into transcoding, 33% done. NOOOOOO! This process take waaaaaay toooo long. Also, have gotten RPC 600 error a couple of times, are they updating the website right now? Or is the transcoding messing this up??
UPDATE 2: still on first movie, 2 hrs 39 min only 59%, Not cool!!
Reported my issue to the support, but it seems that they haven't understood me.
Even with disabled transcoding settings, i'm not able to watch videos anymore (for more then 10seconds).
@SteveW
We believe you've contacted you after the time you submitted the post dated December 9 1:16PM. I've sent you a PM with what we believe is your ticket number for your Dockstar. If this is correct, please contact us again using the existing ticket so we can resume our conversation.
If not, let me know via PM which ticket we've started for your questions.

Here the news i received from Support - very bad:
We've added the transcoding feature with the intent of helping out the majority of our users who have little knowledge or experience with transcoding to make it more convenient for them.
I understand this is a hassle for people that have already transcoded their videos, and even by turning off the feature, the videos are still unplayable on the web UI.
This is, however, understood and the next major update scheduled for sometime in January does address this issue and provides an option to bypass the transcoding process all together while enabling previously transcoded videos to play on my.pogoplug.com
Sorry there isn't a better answer at this point
And my answer is to reflash my Pogoplug with newer software from the start. I guess something got broken when my Pogoplug was upgraded from firmware v1 to v2. I sure hope no one else has my issue though.
Okay. I sent my own support ticket re: this. Hopefully it will shed more light on the issue to support. I have a general question for Cloud Engine. Do you guys have a "beta" group of outside users that test this stuff? It seems like you are rolling out features without fully testing them. Maybe I'm just crazy, and I'm not trying to sound like an a** or bitter, it just seems that this issue is a pretty obvious one that would have been caught by some Beta people before general release..

i do agree, if someone tested the iPhone or Web Interface with a Video File they would have directly seen that issue.
Okay, so I got a bit of info from support re: this issue. Cloud Engine setup movies in a way that if you do not transcode your movies using their setup, your movies won't play, even if you have already transcoded them. I think that's a bit silly. They said that they will probably change that, but it sounds like we won't see that change until January. That of course doesn't solve the problem with being able to play movies that were transcoded by the pogoplug..
We are working on adding more viewing optons for advanced users. I'll get back to you shortly with our proposed changes and a timeline for pushing them out. We do run a beta program where we preview new features - the people on this thread would be great additions. Send me an email if you are interested (jed@cloudengines.com).
I noticed the 10sec preview issue as well and contacted supported. When I read their response about transcoding, I thought they didn't understand my question. After reading this post, it looks like watching videos using an iPhone and thru WEB UI is not as easy as before. I have several videos..so it looks like first I have to PREVIEW them and all and then they get added to the queue for transcoding, which not to mention is taking very looong..!
Are you serious about this video transcoding pogoplug?
First, thanks for all of the great feedback. The background for a lot of the new video features was to help people who know nothing about video formats and transcoding and didn't understand why their videos would not play in the web Flash player, or on their iPhone. The idea was to transcode all videos to a standard format (h.264) at a bitrate that most peoples upload bandwidth could handle. The processor in Pogoplug is fast (1.2Ghz), but ARM processors in general do not have a lot of the support (floating point, separate video processing, ...) your desktop processor has. We are hitting around 10fps for HD video which is great for this chip, but clearly not at real-time rates. The summary is, the new solution will work great for an average person with lots of home videos who doesn't understand video. We have a few changes that we already have in beta and should be able to push out to production early next week. This will put back some of the original functionality where you can play your original source videos whether it has been transcoded or not. I'll put out more information in the next few days, but we are definitely listening to you.
Heya Jed,
I don't object at all to you guys creating an automatic option to conform video to work properly on the pogoplug. In fact I think it's a great idea. My issue is A: making it too automatic, basically forcing the user to do this when they try to play videos, and where there is no information telling us why this is happening etc. That's why you got responses from us on this forum thinking that something was wrong etc. Also, I think you would be better served having "Basic" and "Advanced" options where users that know nothing about video can select this option when watching their videos, which would first be converted (this also would be documented so people would know why the queue happens etc.). The Advanced option would make everything manual, and users can turn the functionality on as needed...again this should be documented so people know what to expect.
Also, regardless this transcoding or not to transcode. We are having trouble viewing the movies that are supposedly transcoded properly...
Hope this helps.
An option to automatically transcode all videos found on the pogo would also be nice! Then you don't have to click on each one (I have many and this gets pretty tedious) just to watch 10 seconds to have it tell you it will be transcoded. Also, I was wondering if the transcoded versions are saved on our pogoplug and where? Or does this mean that my videos are being replaced? (by this I mean do I no longer have .avi files on my hard drive and they are all now H.264 files?)
Hey njones88, just an FYI: H.264 is a codec and not a file format. So you will probably still see .avi files, except they would have been encoded with h.264 instead of whatever you originally used to create them. Make sense?
njones88, begunfx is correct - we never touch your original file, but instead create a new, small version of the original. Points are well taken - we did a terrible job communicating the new features and for this I'm sorry - it won't happen again. Give me a few days to articulate our plans for getting the "advanced" features in place and some realistic dates (it will be soon), and I'll post again with the plans.
