So, as you all may know, I'm relativly new to pogo. I've come in to the pogo community with high aspirations. If you would, have a look at my scenario and these goals while I try and discover the true potential of pogo (in this particular situation.) I also kind of figured this post would help others should they want to do the same thing...
History: It all started when I was simply trying to create a solution to allow home-networked Mac and PC users access to all of my data on my own personal "cloud." Ideally, both users would be able to backup and restore to this "device" and be able to read/write to it natively (via Apple Finder or Windows Explorer), just as if it were just any other network-drive, flash drive, or external hard drive. Lastly, because I'm obsessed with redundancy, I would like to have an incremental backup of this entire "device" stored on an identical hard drive.
Potential Solutions: I first started by finding and purchasing pogoplug to accompany two, 2TB internal sataII drives (2x2TB). It was my ideal solution to most everything I listed up there, except I didn't have a good redundany solution for the active "device." So, I hastefully returned the pogoplug (v.1) so I would meet the RMA requirements. I then decided to use a RAID 1 solution. I figured that since it was an identical copy of the main "device," it would be my perfect solution. Unfortunately, the 2-bay RAID 1 device I got was not easily accessible via finder or explorer and was mostly web-based. Moreover, I realized that RAID 1 is NOT a backup of anything. If I deleted a file, it was gone forever...from both devices. Then I thought about a software method of backing up the main/active device to the "backup" device and came across SuperDuper for Mac. (I am the primary user and I'm using Mac Snow Leopard...but still have access to Windows 7 on my machine and Windows XP on another user's machine.) I figured, what if I simply did incremental backups from the active device "x" to the backup device "y." But now...how exactly would that work?
Potential Outcomes: Now I am at a conundrum and would like some of your thoughts. Is there a more efficient or better way to accomplish these goals? Would it be entirely functional to assign "drive x" as the main, "drive y" as the backup, and be able to do incremental backups from "x" to "y"? If so, which I assume is possible, to what extent could I do so? Specifically, is it possible to backup drive "x" to drive "y" without having to have my computer on over the pogo? Would I have to keep my computer on while doing it? Would it be any faster/slower to back it up via the pogo from one device to the other? Should I just do it the old fashioned way and hook them both up to my laptop via USB?
What thoughts do you have on such a plan? I am about to get the pogoplug again because I believe it's really the best solution...I just wonder what all I really could do with it, aside from what's "in the box" as it were.
Thank you for your time! :-)
