From experience, the fedex fee includes a Canada Customs inspect fee thats about $C30. Both UPS and Fedex include these fees. Shipping air mail does not have an inspect fee,
Why is the shipping cost to Canada so high? $50 for FedEx shipping as the only option is really high. That's almost half the cost of the device itself! I can get items from other retailers shipped to Canada from all over the USA via USPS for a fraction of that. If you are serious about the product being available internationally, and to Canada in particular, then you really must revisit this.
It's actually a FedEx "Brokerage" fee, which includes the GST and a handling fee. They can set this fee to be anything they want and Canada Customs has nothing to do with it.
Canada Post (which handles all shipments sent via USPS) charges GST for most products, including almost anything manufactured in the USA, plus a small handling fee ($5). And that's only if they can be bothered to do so. More than half the items I order get delivered without any additional fees added.
Regardless of how the fees are calculated, $50 for shipping for a $129 item is extremely high. Certainly much higher than shipments via USPS.
We realize the current cost to shipping to Canada is excessive. We initially used the Postal Service but live tracking was non-existent and insurance was unenforceable. The barrier to lower shipping costs is finding a suitable distributor in Canada for the Pogoplug. We will announcing plans for Canada in the upcoming months. Thanks for your interest in Pogoplug!
As of now, you can pick one up from Tigerdirect, which has stores in the Toronto area, for $Cdn 139. You can also order it from Tigerdirect.ca
