Is a GUI for the app coming? What about somehow modding the app so as not to need to type your password into the arguments (as plaintext). Just wondering.

Hey Crimsonredmk,

Not in the near future, I'm afraid - I would be curious to see how many people would be interested in having a GUI for the Linux app- any other takers?

I too would like a Linux GUI.  While I am proficient with the linux command line and have created a script to start the pogoplug, it would be so nice to avoid starting a terminal session to run the script by having a GUI. Just because geeks use linux doesn't mean we have to limit our linux pogoplug usage to geeks.  Count me as a vote in favor of a linux GUI.

There are a lot of Windows folks now migrating to Linux who have no comprehension of the Bash terminal or the command line. I have a Tonido Plug (Marvel Sheeva) that has a beautiful GUI for Linux. If I'm asked which unit I recommend you can bet it will be the one that employs a GUI.

I was told your unit was designed strictly for Windows users. As a Linux user I'm used to that. But before I put my money into your product it has to be accessible without the command line.

Just create a file with the following line...

pogoplugfs --user [your_email] --password [your_password] --mountpoint /media/pogoplug

Keep this file in your path and make sure it is executable. Running this once will allow you to access the drives connected to your PogoPlug.

Or am I missing something? When I do the above I can access the drives with any GUI based file manager.

to start pogo automatically

http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/11674/pogoplugfs-executable-at-startu...

as for gui. what exactly do you want? pogoplug is basically like a very cheap NAS solution with a public web site service to access, stream (... somewhat...), share your content.

To be more comfortable with my Pogoplug, I need :

- An installer (.deb package for debian / ubuntu for example) ;
- after installation to see pogo-drives in Nautilus would be enough to manage files efficiently...

For the moment, with my Karmic Koala(s), it's easier to connect to distant ftp drives than to my local pogo-drives...

I would like the password a little less visible. Creating a minor text based file and expecting security is naive.

By GUI I meant just a simple login box instead of having to open up a terminal or making a shell script. Nothing too big.

I agree, this would be much appreciated. I use Dropbox, and it has a nice little GUI (or panel applet).

Me! Me! And one that doesn't use Flash. :(.I still haven't gotten uploading to work with Ubuntu or Red Hat.

I would like a simple GUI version as well.

something simple like dropbox.

Funny you should say that. I actually just set up an experimental PC and wanted to see how hard it would be to migrate from Windows to Linux (ubuntu). After I got everything all setup, I tried installing the pogoplug software and found it to be way too difficult for my Windows/Mac brain. That whole command line thing is very frustrating! It stinks because I so badly want to become a regular Linux user!

After I got everything set up correctly, who needs a gui. It sets up just like any plug and play device.

FYI. This is how I made my Pogo Drive for linux more secure.

First. I created a set of folders. I created the Pogoplug folder and left it in my Home folder. Then I created a subfolder called PogoDrive.

Second, I have the pogoplug drive file downloaded and I copy that into the Pogoplug folder.

Third, I created an empty text file and added this to it.

cd ~/Pogoplug
./pogoplugfs --user USERNAME --password PASSWORD --mountpoint ~/Pogoplug/PogoDrive

Then I saved the text file as something like, mount_pogo.bin and chmodded it to allow for execution. This is simple. In Terminal move the to Pogoplug folder and type chmod a+x mount_pogo.bin

After all this is done I added a shortcut in my menus to the mount_pogo.bin file and now I can start PogoDrive without needing to worry about GUI or loss of security.

You're adding convenience by running pogoplugfs from a shell script, but you're not really adding any security.  Commands run from a script will still have all of their arguments available to anyone who wants to look at the process table.  (Open a terminal and type "ps axww --forest".)

If you want to increase security, you should add your username & password into ~/.pogoplugfs.conf as explained when you run "pogoplugfs --help".  Be sure to "chmod 600" the file.  Bonus points if you encrypt your home directory.

A GUI would be great.. similar to the one in the Windows version.. these types of apps is what will bring more people to our world.

I still don't understand the problem. If this doesn't work for you maybe you should stick with Windows.

With all do respect, this is the type of remark from Linux users that keep Windows user paying Micro$oft.

I don't think so. People use Windows because they are used to it and want the comfort of that familiarity. When people switch to Mac (yes, I also have a MacBook Pro) they have made a considerable financial investment in the change and are willing to invest the time in learning the new interface, etc.

Someone who isn't willing to work with a simple, one line shell script that will enable using the PogoPlug with ANY existing GUI filemanger will most likely not put up with the learning curve of learning any new OS.

Frankly, I'm tired of people saying they wish this or that worked like Windows. Macs work like Macs. Windows works like Windows. Linux works like, well, pretty much depends on your choice of distribution, desktop, and other customizations. To many people, familiarity and comfort and worth paying for. Let them.

We have three laptops here in our house (1 Mac, 1 Windows, and 1 Linux). I prefer Linux (I have been using it since 1999). I didn't make the remark disparagingly. If you want an environment that works like Windows, your best option is Windows.

This isn't about Mac vs. Windows vs. Linux. It's about Cloud Engines writing a 100KB login box for Linux, like Dropbox has done for those who want it. You're free to use their commandline utility or a GUI on Linux. If you're going to argue that Linux is about choice, then users should be given a choice over how to log in and it should be on par with Windows and Mac.

WoW! hold the press... I was not trying to start a debate of who is better.(even though I only use linux). I personally don't have any issue using command lines and learning how to compile different programs to run on my linux flavor.. I was only using windows as a reference as to how it would help others to see the light (in my eyes) and come over to linux. Most people in this world don't want to deal with command line. For example I have converted over my wife, mother-in-law, sisters, brothers and many other people around my life over to linux. They are tired of the bugs, viruses, and malware. But I could not move them over if "desktop" linux was not as gui as it is now. They just need to learn the new way of doing it and don't need to understand the importance of syntax errors. I'm with user crimsonredmk.. thanks for your comment.

We are talking about a one line command that can be added to your startup scripts and you can then access your pogoplug drives from ANY of the Linux file managers that are out there.

July 13, 2010 9:21 PM

????

Where is the choice missing? I really don't understand, so enlighten me ;-)

I don't use Windows or Mac. Frankly the few times I have looked at Windows it seems overly complicated!
