I know this is a very old topic, but I just encountered this problem. I did not realize that this device does not work behind a proxy. I have a transparent proxy provided by my ClearOS gateway/firewall and I forgot it was there. When trying to activate the pogoplug It made me enter the code on the bottom of the device manually and after that it could not see the hard drive I plugged in. The exact error was "Your Pogoplug enabled device does not have a hard drive attached." What worked for me was excluding the 'service.cloudengine.com' domain from my proxy in the web interface of my proxy.

Some months ago when I was running a CentOS based Linux firewall/gateway which used the Squid Proxy Server I had issues seeing the Pogoplug until I entered the following url's in the "do not proxy" list:
my.pogoplug.com
pogoplug.com
Now I've switched to pfSense on the router/gateway and again using the Squid Proxy server and with the above exclusion's I can see the "Files shared with me" link in the Finder however not the main Pogoplug storage. I know for certain that my issue is the proxy server because if I disable it and reload from the OS X client the Pogoplug storage shows up again.
Are there other url's or perhaps IP addresses that may be blocking my main Pogoplug storage and that I can add to the exclusion from the proxy list?
Any help would be appreciated...

I may have found the issue, a url:
service.pogoplug.com
I added this to the exclusion list and now I'm connecting...
I guess someone from Cloud Engines would have to confirm this...
