is there any way to tell whether or not someone is currently uploading or downloading files on the pogoplug? I have a few clients who access the drive regularly and I would like to know if would be safe to remove a drive without disrupting their activity. I guess I could look at the read/write light on my drive but that is hardly convenient or accurate.

Thanks

Hi Cshaw,

There is currently no good method for monitoring whether or not people are using the drive. You could ssh or telnet into the plug if you happen to be on the same LAN and see if there's any activity, but that's probably less convenient than watching the blinking light.

Real-time monitoring of disk activity is not a feature set that we had planned, but it is certainly one that we'd consider if it seemed like something folks wanted. Hope that answers the question!

I'd be interested in this ability too. My interest is more of a "what's going on" view. At times, the access light seems to begin blinking, stops, starts, etc. Just like someone is reading or writing to the drive. That would be fine except that both my Home PC, and my work notebook were powered off, and they are the only machines I've Put the drive client on, and I was not accessing the web interface. Question is, who did? And what were they doing? It is not shared with anyone else. After about 20 minutes of access light blinking, and my router indicating traffic flow... it stopped. What happened?

i would like this feature too. being able to monitor who accessed or is accessing data on my drives would be awesome. something like a download history and an activity monitor.

this sounds like a very useful feature to have.

I agree. I think that would be a feature a lot of people would like to have =)

My hard drive (Famtom Drive G-Force 2TB eSATA USA 2.0) happens to be noisy. It constantly has activity as if it is being pinged every second. This is at a time that there should be zero activity. Perhaps this is just the way it works? I have a support ticket open with this question.

As a teacher this would be a handy feature

I would also like to know who is uploading or downloading how much.

Ditto for me. I just want to know who is poking around my stuff!

I would like to be able to see who is accessing files and perhaps even notify them in the event that I need to perform any maintenance. Along with this the ability to see what the hit count is and on what files.

I think this would prove a very useful function and also would like it to be added.

Isn't such a facility provided on the new Pogoplug Biz?

Pogoplug Biz features include:

    * Usage Statistics and Auditing: quickly access a summary of how many times a file or folder has been viewed, streamed or downloaded. Keep track of the number of views, streams, and downloads.

Remember, its not what life does to you, but what you do with what life does to you, that matters.

Sounds like biz has it...I'd love to have usage stats available for my dockstar.

Any update to having this on the regular model? As I begin to share more, I'd love to be able to monitor the traffic.

Can a linux utility be used to create an access log file on the attached drive? This would be a history but not a current activity indicator. But it would simple to open the text file to see if someone has downloaded a file you shared with them.

Please add this feature!!

Agreed! this feature would be extremely useful. I'd really appreciate having this feature available. I'd also like to see this partnered with a bandwidth throttling capability all built into the installable app. this would be awesome!

Watch the console messages. When they stop, the drive is idle. Mine spews console messages, the whole time the drive is being accessed.

Some routers are compatible to use a firmware upgrade called "Tomato". With it
you can easily display a graph of real-time or last 24 hr. bandwidth, both inbound and outbound. Also has weekly and monthly usage stats in gigabytes.
You still do not know who or what is being uploaded.

(use your fav search engine and include"router" and "tomato" in the search for more info.)
