I have invited family and friends to my PogoPlug site.

Initially they had no problem going to the site via either the Email link or bookmark after going there once.

Now a couple of weeks later whenever they try to go there, they get a 'login' page.

What happened?  Does everyone whom I want to see the site need to actually become a PogoPlug member?  If so this will certainly stop me from using this.

Please let me know how to allow visitors to see my site without having to sign up with PogoPlug.

Thanks,

Dan Kinsella

Dan,

In order for others to browse the files on your Pogoplug, you need to "share" directories with them. The Pogoplug is secure and doesn't have automatic, full reign, public access.

Next to directories in your Pogoplug you'll see a Share button. You can then email a link to people you would like to share the directory with, and they can then click on that link to browse the files there. You can also control their access level (i.e., read only, etc.)

By clicking on that share link, people you share files with do not need to sign up with Pogo or anything like that.

Peter -

That's how I invited them originally.  At first there were no problems getting to the site.  Now ~ a month later the 'direct to the site' does not work.  Instead you are taken to a signin page.

Not sure what might have changed.

That's strange. Did you cancel the sharing of the folder and restart it? I'm guessing that would generate a different secure link.

If not, I would try that. Stop the sharing and restart it, and email a new link to see if that works. It should, and if it doesn't, I would contact Pogoplug/Cloud Engines support.

Let me know if it works!

This is from the Pogoplug help documentation:

Note: The link to the shared folder will expire 2 weeks from the time it was generated and sent. If the user it is being shared with has not created an account and password they will no longer be able to access the share. If the owner of the share removes them from the share list and re-adds them, a new link will be generated and sent with a 2 week expiration.

Now I'm really confused...

Peter says invited visitors don't need to become members, only need to have the appropriate URL from the invite.

Kieth appears to be saying that to access the shored folder after 2 weeks EVERYONE needs to become a member.

Help!

Dan, for security purposes, the invite URL lives for 2 weeks then expires. If the invitee creates an account with a password, then they gain access to the share without expiration. This is to guard against your URL getting out and someone on the internet being able to access your share willy-nilly.

If you simply want a persistent view of the share that does not require a logon, you need to follow this extra step: in the share view, click "Enable Public Viewing" and use the URL it provides you. This URL will not expire, and is safer than the URL that comes via the invite because you can't gain write access.

I would like Keith to clarify this further if necessary, but Dan, I can totally see why you are confused!

The person you send the link to absolutely does not have to create a My.Pogoplug account to view or download the file. Try sending a file to one of your email addresses, copy and paste the link into any browser, and it will work without having to sign up.

I think that what Keith is saying is that if the users wish to create an account, and the link has not been deleted or changed, that they will be able to access it beyond the two week period.

Keith, can you verify that?

I inquired about the "read only" access level, which I didn't see as an option - only 'view / download" and "full access" are available. JonQA of Cloud Engines answered my question with the following:

"I'm afraid that feature does not exist. It is one that we are considering for implementation but at the moment you can only either share a folder read / write or read-only, but in either case downloading is still possible"
