am planning to purchanse a pogoplug very shortly...

having not used the hardware or the software yet, I wanted to ask a question up front.

I know that I can set up the pogo so that people (myself included) can access a USB hard drive via a web browser.  my question is then: do I have any way of knowing who has accessed the drive and what they've done while they were connected?  Is it possible to "see" users while they're actually connected, and view what they're doing, what they're uploading or downloading or other activities?

I get the impression the pogo software is something like a FTP server, only much easier to set up and to use...

 thanks,

W

currently there is no way to tell who has downloaded what from you pogoplug via any user interface. you can control who has access to your drive, and what folder they have access to, and whether they can make changes to the folder or simply download/view.

think of it more like online file storage, except the physical storage is your hard drive and it's sitting inside your home network using your bandwidth, instead of residing on a remote server. additionally there are numerous interfaces to your files, allowing you to view and manage your files from anywhere.

thanks -

the important thing is that anybody (whom you authorize) can access the drive from any web browser. Unlike an FTP server, I wouldn't have to mess around with a lot of complicated stuff like setting up IP addresses and things like that...

what are the different interfaces that you mention?

(lastly, I notice that no retailer seems to carry the pogoplug OTHER than the manufacturer - I can't buy one at my fave local computer store, J&R in NYC --- which is fine, but I was just wondering if that's a deliberate policy. I certainly don't mind getting one via mail order from the manufacturer...)

you are correct about anyone with access being able to use any web browser. however they will only see the location on your pogoplug to which you have given them access, and you can revoke that access at any time.

the interfaces you can use currently are: web interface, desktop drive interface (makes your pogoplug look like a local drive), and an iphone app. we will be adding/improving interface support.

currently we only sell the pogoplug directly via our website.

Yes! I bought one - can't wait to take it for a test drive.

my next question: you mention
[desktop drive interface (makes your pogoplug look like a local drive)]

can you tell me more about this? Are there any screen shots on the site here that show how this works?

thanks!

peter has a blurb on the desktop drive software in his in-depth pogoplug introduction here that includes a few screenshots:

great!

well here's a follow-up question I would like to ask:

can you arrange for ME to access something on one of your pogoplugged drives? it doesn't have to be anything, just a PDF or a piece of pogo promo literature or something... I would just like to try it out...

my guess is that you would eMail (or even post here) me three pieces of data:

1 - the URL address
2 - my user name
3 - a password

am just curious to see what it's like - uploading & downloading (small files, I promise)

I already ordered one of these - I promise you I'm a paying PP customer..

Since this seems on-topic in this thread...

Two questions about the Desktop Drive Interface:

I found one of the support pages says, "In the photo to the left, you can see the Pogoplug drive software on a Windows PC. The Pogoplug is mounted as the "P:" drive, and is accessible like any other hard drive connected to your system. The Pogoplug Drive software is available for 32 bit and 64 bit flavors of Windows Vista and XP. The client is also available for 32 bit and 64 bit Linux systems."

But I thought I'd also seen it referring to being supported by Mac as well... is there a way to get the desktop drive interface working on a mac?

Also, would the desktop drive interface work outside of your home network? That is, could I set it up to access that way, and then always use it that way regardless of where I am?

for Mac see http://www.pogoplugged.com/download/list?cat=27
