1. "killall telnetd" and then use "nano /etc/init.d/rcS" and delete the telnetd line so it isn't started on boot. Nothing will break.
2. You can try to add users and groups if you know what you're doing. Use "adduser" and "addgroup". Not that it's not the full-fledged user/group system, it's Busybox's smaller version.
3. Yes. "passwd root"

Couple of questions:
1. Is it possible to turn off telnetd on the pogoplug? If I turn it off will I break something?
2. Is it possible to turn off remote root log into the pogoplug and use a lesser user with sudo or something to accomplish root access when logged into the pogoplug? Will this break anything?
3. At a minimum is it alright to change the root password without breaking something?
Thanks.
OK. Thanks for the tips.
One more thing, is there a document that describes how cloudmachines participates in the process of allowing one to access their data in (a) locally behind a firewall in the home - on a local network - and (b) from outside the home firewall?
My assumption is that cloudmachines acts as a "dating service" that matches the client with the pogoplug. This requires the pogoplug to establish a connection to the cloudmachines server(s) which maps somehow to my.pogogplug.com. User data is then routed through the cloudmachine server to the client or handed off directly depending on the client location wrt behind or in front of the firewall. The main purpose of this being to make it easy for anyone to get this to work (ie. not dealign with firewall configuration).
Thanks.
Your assumption description is on the money but I haven't seen a technical document describing the details. I too would like to see such a document.
This is pretty much verified by scoping the conversation between the client and the pogo "cloud" (using eg. Wireshark). You can see the initial conversation with the cloudmachines server and then the local conversation between the client and the pogoplug.
What I am most curious about is if it is possible for the handoff between client and pogoplug is possible so the file xfers between these two are direct and do not pass through the cloudmachines server (when the client is on the outside of the firewall). So in effect, the dating service takes only, to match the client with the pogoplug behind the firewall. Maybe this happens now but I have only verified with a scope the inside firewall case.
