the limiting factor in your scenario is the upload bandwidth of your mother-in-law's internet connection at home. there is no way around this limitation, aside from upgrading her connection, but generally consumer/home internet connections have a very limited upload speed.
directly editing documents to a pogoplug over the internet is not recommended. if your connection hiccups in the middle of a save or something like that, you may end up with a corrupted document. the safest way to edit your files remotely is to first download them to your desktop, edit them, then upload them back to your pogoplug.
sounds like your setup should work. if you have 2 routers chained together (meaning, a router plugged into another router) you may have difficulty accessing the pogoplug from the interior network. i can't tell from your description if this is the case.

Hi,
I got our Pogoplug yesterday and set things up last night. SUPER EASY!! and very excited. I was able to create new folders, share with others and have them download/upload files (mostly photos).
Also briefly tested itunes with my library on the HD attached to pogoplug. worked fine from home, skipping and pausing from work.
I gave my mother in law a folder of her own to upload/download pics of the grandkids. she uploaded 270 pics today, but it took a few hours (is that normal?)
Equipment we have :
- pogoplug
- Linksys Wireless N router (pogoplug is plugged into this one)
- another linksys router in our media hub (we have a house that was pre-wired to ethernet)
- cable modem
- HD is a 1.5 TB Seagate FreeAgent (current file format is FAT32)
- Windows XP OS on our laptops
Desired uses (in order of priority):
- Music Library
- Photo Library
- Document Storage Access from anywhere
- FTP folder (external shared with other to upload/download files)
which brings me to ask for some help. I'm trying this up for personal/family & friends access. will be hitting it from work, iphone, other home networks (CA, MA if it matters). is there an optimal way to set this up?
keep in mind that I am not a technical person. i know enough to do basic set up, am willing to try some basic coding if need be, but am not a techie.
thanks keith
which is the interior network? :-) our setup is a cable modem --> wired router --> pre-wired ethernet cable in the media hub which connects to the office ethernet port --> wireless router --> pogoplug with HD connected.
would it be worth moving the pogoplug and associated HD to the wired router?
you want to have the pogoplug attached to the same router to which your pcs are attached. that is, if your pcs are connected to the wireless router, then keep the pogoplug attached to the wireless router. but you may have difficulty accessing the pogoplug from pcs attached to the "outer" wired router.
basically if the pogoplug desktop application is working and you are getting good speed to the pogoplug from inside your home network, then you have it set up correctly :)
Are you sure that both routers are setup as "routers"? I have 2 routers similar to yours but only one is set up as a router with a WAN connection, the other has nothing connected to the WAN input and is really just a switch.
think ianjb is right. there's 1 router and then the switch is for wireless access and what the pogoplug is plugged into.
