This is a good idea.
I have a question though, have you shared any folders with anyone outside your home? This is the only significant use of your upload bandwidth. Otherwise Pogoplug (if working properly) should only do imperceptible checkins with the Pogoplug service.
Have you contacted support? We'd be very interested to know what your plug is up to.
My connection is a simple DSL type with 160k down and 60k up. I've been very frustrated with Pogoplug several times for consuming all my Internet bandwidth and simply disconnected it. Immediately, my Internet speed returns to normal. This is really not acceptable. It's made worse, because I don't know why. There have been many times were the network lights are flashing a lot and I know that no one is using it. I can't see what's going on with it.
Since, this happened that router died and I purchased a small business router that will limit up/down speeds based on IP and assigned the Pogoplug a static IP to keep it from consuming everything. This is fine for me. My brother, cousins, grandmother, etc. would just be pissed and the leave the box disconnected. The new router is great for keeping the Pogoplug in line.
Yes, the problem is with outside users. I don't have any other inside users. This would really be sweet spot for me. Inside users can have access to a Drobo share on a small server that stays on all the time. My connection is probably the constraint.
I don't have any reason to believe Pogoplug is misbehaving. Just that I don't really know what it's doing and I'm not quite to the proficiency level of analyzing it's traffic. It would be helpful and maybe it's already done to see a status line on the my.Pogoplug.com\settings for each drive that displays "updating firmware" or "indexing drive", "drive sleeping", "plotting world takeover", etc.
