Actually if on the same LAN the TiVo should work the same as the PC and not go out over the internet and back in. They set up the RSS feeds to determine if you are on the local LAN or WAN before grabbing the file.
Good idea though I am going to take a look at doing so with my tivos.
My Tivo HD can subscribe to videos via RSS.
My pogoplug can publish a folder of videos to the internet via RSS.
I'd love to be able to access the videos from my Tivo, but it seems like the Tivo would be downloading the videos from my pogo plug over the internet even though they are on the same local network. If this is true, I'd be chewing through my bandwith cap for no reason (pogo upload + tivo download means double bandwidth usage for each video). I'm sure it would be about 15x slower than over the local network as well.
Is it possible to stream the RSS directly to the Tivo on my home network? To create a local RSS feed some how? (And no, I'm not interested in the Tivo Desktop method of making pogo plug videos available. That requires my PC to be on at all times. I'm trying to have the tivo and pogo communicate "directly").

Are you sure? I really don't think that's the way it will work. A PC on the same network can mount the pogo drive because it knows it is on the same network, but the Tivo doesn't have the ability to mount network drives.
To sign up for an RSS feed on the Tivo you put in the web address of the feed, which would be http://mypogoplug.com/feeds/blahblahblah The pogo plug isn't going to intercept this http request. The request will go out to the router and to pogoplug.com. Will pogoplug.com somehow inform the tivo that the RSS feed is on its local network?
I suppose I could test it out by monitoring my upload and download activity while downloading a movie via RSS.
The other option I'm exploring is installing pytivo (a Tivo desktop replacement program) on the pogo plug so that it appears to the Tivo to be a PC with Tivo Home Desktop on it.
There is a linux version of pytivo and I know that the pogoplug allows you to install packages if you ssh into it.
I'll update this thread with my progress.

Actually, now that I think about it - I think you are right. Pogoplug.com should be smart enough to know that the Tivo and pogo are on the same network, so it should send back the 192.168.x.x ip address of the pogo plug.
I'm going to give this a shot tonight.

Hi Guys,
The Pogoplug service checks to see if the http request for the RSS feed is coming from the same public ip (ie on the same local network) as the Pogoplug its being served from. If it appears they are on the same network, the rss feed will include the local ip of the files in question.
The same feed url from outside your home will include the my.popoplug.com urls. So as long as you pogoplug and tivo are on the same network it should work fine.
Please let support know if you have any issues.
Thanks John,
I tried this today and I can't get it working. My tivo says that it found the valid RSS feed, but that the the format of the videos aren't valid for tivo playback. It says this even though I copied a compatable video from a different RSS feed (it was a Revision 3 show that I can view via RSS on my tivo). Since I'm certain the video is in the correct format, it must be the RSS feed itself that is not in the correct format.
Tivo has a developer guide that specifies exactly what MUST be in the RSS feed for it to work on Tivo (look under Publishing your RSS Feed):

Is there any way for me to customize those required RSS feed fields in my pogoplug RSS feeds?

Looking at the RSS feed source from my.pogoplug.com/feeds/my feedhere, I see that several of the fields required by tivo are missing. Would it be possible to make the feed tivo compatable by just putting in a default value for some of those fields? For example, it requires an image tag, which doesn't exist. Maybe just stick a link to the pogoplug icon image in there for all RSS feeds?
At best, you could let users fill in those fields when they publish their RSS feed on the my.popgoplug.com site.

Making Pogoplug feeds work with Tivo seems like a very worthwhile endeavor. I'll pitch it to the boys here, unfortunately, I don't write the schedule, just the code ;)

Outstanding! I really appreciate it.

@janogg Thanks for looking into this.
@JohnD... Sheez, you have nothing to do this weekend. I am sure you can knock it out... JK!
Hey guys... This is exactly what I was trying to do with my new Pogoplug. While troubleshooting I came across this posting. Does anyone know if there has been any change in this? I am trying to get this to work by a specific time and this is a perfect and easy procedure for my clients. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Jason
I tried everything I could think of, but I wasn't able to get it working, and I haven't heard anything from the pogoplug people.
I ended up using a program called streambaby to stream videos on my pogoplug drive to my tivo. It works well, but it requires my PC to be on and running Streambaby. I wanted to have this capability directly from the pogoplug.

Add me to the list of wanting to use my tivo with the PogoPlug... I have a series 3 hd tivo but I was curious where you put in the rss feed ( under the podcast section ? ) and are you typing the entire rss feed with the tivo remote and the onscreen keyboard ?
I have done a lot of research about this but, unfortunately, at the moment the RSS feed that Pogoplug supplies is not compatible with Tivo. I suggest checking these sites from Tivo's website about making compatible RSS feeds:
http://www.tivo.com/abouttivo/resourcecenter/developerpublisherdetails/index....
In the long run, I did get an RSS feed to work on Tivo, but I did not use the Pogoplug to broadcast it. I went another route. I put in a request with Pogoplug's support to add this functionality, but I would not hold your breath.
Dbaseiii - you enter the custom RSS feed under Tivo Central / Video on Demand / Free VOD and Web Videos / then scroll down the list until you reach Custom RSS Feeds.
Good Luck.
