I'd really like to see some serial ports on pogoplug, for controlling devices remotely.

If you've seen the other threads I've just posted, I'm also after homeplug and X10 support.

What I envision with these features is a home automation device which can be plugged into the wall anywhere in your house, obtain its network connection over the powerline, and provide the capacity for users to log in to control devices elsewhere in the house via the X10 interface, and also be able to control devices near to the pogoplug through the serial ports.

Are there any plans for a home-automation centric pogoplug in the future? It would be the awesomest thing ever ever ever ever. Especially if it was also acting as a file server / remote disk. Amaaaaazing it would be.

I take it you're referring to an old RS-232 serial port, and not the Universal Serial Bus 2.0 port that's already on the Pogoplug? Given the ubiquity of USB these days (with USB 3.0 now starting to show up), I think you'd be better off looking into USB to RS-232 adapters than hoping for a Pogoplug with an RS-232 port.

USB adapters would be okay but it's nice to keep things simple; simple cabling (not needing extra inline adapters), simple driver requirements, not having to worry about dynamic assignments of ttys causing you to accidently turn on your sprinklers when you actually meant to turn on the lights, etc Wink

USB would certainly be preferred for most applications like the current network-storage pogoplug, but for a home-automation centric device I'd prefer RS232. Maybe some I²C/TWI as well for controlling those home-brewed home-automation projects remotely.
