This is interesting, it sounds like your backup program is doing something to the files that changes things for the Pogoplug, although I can't imagine why it would. Is it encrypting the files or changing them in any way?
You might want to submit a support request to Cloud Engines by emailing support@pogoplug.com if this continues to happen, but hopefully though some experimenting you can get it to work. I'm on a Mac and don't have experience with that particular backup software, so I'm not sure if I can provide any further assistance.
Anyone out there experiencing this same issue or using the same backup program?
For the most part my Pogoplug works beautifully. However, I have noticed that when I place files (photos) on my Pogoplug using backup software (FileBack PC), the folders are visible and the files appear without their thumbnails. Further, the photos will sometimes appear when I preview them, but most often they will not. The preview window opens, but it is blank. This does not happen when I drag and drop the folders/photos to the Pogoplug. I have left the photos there for over a day in case Pogoplug needed to do some indexing or other magic. Any thoughts?
Thanks Peter. I think I will contact Cloud Engines. I know that the backup program is not encrypting the files because I can access the backed-up files directly without using the program. I will also examine the backup settings more thoroughly to see if I can spot anything.
Another facet of the situation (a good one) is that even when the preview is not displayed (it's unpredictable), I can still download the file and that works perfectly. Thanks again.
Thats because the Cedatebase Pogo used is not reading those backed up files.
The Pogoplug drive program has a reload option that may make them visible. If that doesn't work for you then you need to delete the cedata info and then it will work.
1. Safely unmount the drive from your Pogoplug by using the eject radio button next to the folder representing your drive in http://my.pogoplug.com Alternately, you can safely eject your drive from the Settings tab of my.pogoplug.com
2. Attach the hard drive to your computer, allow it be discovered by Windows
3. In Windows Explorer, focus mouse on your external hard drive, right-click, select Properties.
4. From Tools tab, click Check Now button, allow process to complete.
5. In Windows Explorer, delete the .cedata directory from your hard drive.
6. Safely unmount drive from Windows using Safely Remove Hardware button in the task tray at the bottom right corner.
7. Power cycle your Pogoplug, wait top two led's to become solid. Check that the link light at the input of the ethernet jack is lit.
8. Power on your hard drive and attach it to the Powerplug.
Then it should work like you expect.
I have the same issue. When using the web interface, most of my uploaded photos do not have previews. I tried Brandon C's recommendation but no go on my pogo. I have uploaded several photos from different camera's and there is no difference. I have tried explorer and safari. I have to assume it's related to the way the web interface reads the file off my Pogoplug. Also, when using the iphone app I am able only to view photos which have thumbnail previews. Please advise.
IntellP,
From what I understand the pogoplug software builds thumbnails of the pics that the web browser uses to give you a preview. If it doesn't build them properly you won't see them.
I have had a similar problem and have reported it to Support AT pogoplug.com and am awaiting a fix. I suggest you do the same so it is recorded and looked into.

I have the same problem. I have various folders with pictures most of which display correctly. Once in a while I will browse a folder through the web and see no thumbnails. I have gotten around the problem by re-copying the afected files and folders to the pogoplug (using the windows software). Though I have not consistently replicated the problem yet, I have noticed that folders created by SyncToy (which clones folders on my primary PC to the pogoplug) tend to be the ones which do not display pictures on the web.
Any hints on to how to fix this permanently would be appreciated!
Yes - I have the exact same problem with Synctoy. When using that tool jpg's don't show via the web interface.
Don't mean this to be a threadjack, but I'm seeing similar issues as reported above but with my iPhone. I wondered if it was because I transferred a significant amount of data directly to my intended harddrive prior to connecting it to the pogoplug. So I rebooted per above. That helped. But there are still a wide array of files not visible either as thumbnails or when selecting the file. Otherwise, the web app works fine.
Same issue applies when uploading from iPhone to Pogo. Photo is not visible from the Pogo.
My guess is that it is a refresh issue with the Pogo DB and the way it constructs thumbnails?
i tried the suggestion above and I still see no previews. so far this product has been a bit of a letdown. it doesn't work on my wife's mac 10.5. the previews on my.pogoplug.com don't work for images or video. trying to open a video from file system doesn't work - even when i'm on my home network. i hope there's a solution to at least this issue soon.
we fixed some issues around preview images on the pogoplug which would affect previews from the web application or the iphone. you may need to eject your drive from the pogoplug via the settings page on the web application, and re-plug it back into the pogoplug and allow it to scan the drive before they will show up. if you are still missing previews, you may need to eject the drive, plug it into your pc and delete the .cedata directory in the drive root, and re-plug it back into the pogoplug and allow it to scan the drive.
Maybe this will help. I had the same problem - some photos not displaying. I tried the fixes, including deleting .cedata with no luck. I was ready to give up but wanted to make sure I did, in fact, delete all of those files. So I turned on Windows "view hidden files" feature and sure enough, a hidden .cedata file appeared. I deleted the file and reconnected the hard drive to pogogplug and let it scan a good hour. After that, everything worked fine... all the photos now display. There is still a bug or 2 (some videos play from the site while others have to be dowloaded to play) but I am much happier now. Hope this additional fix helps.
I'm having the same problem with Goodsync (a syncing program made by the people of Roboform).
Photos added by Goodsync to the pogo drive do show a thumbnail image on the Windows client but not on the web client. Surprisingly, even when there's no thumbnail image on the web client, the image is visible when clicked. On the iPhone app, these files have no thumbnail image; when file is opened a black/blank screen is shown.
I haven't these types of problems with DOC or PDF files using Goodsync.
Follow up from above:
After reading other threads covering this problem of absent thumbnails/images I tried
1. Using the RELOAD option of the Windows Client (right click over toolbar icon and click RELOAD - this did not help
2. I ejected the pogo drive from the Pogoplug, via the web client and reattached it to the Pogoplug - this worked, all thumbnails and images are now viewable on both the web client and the iPhone application.
Can anything be done to make this process more reliable and automatic, i.e., adding images to our drives so that the thumbnails are refreshed and viewable on the web client and iPhone? (even when the images are added by syncing programs?)
The only solutions offered so far are 1) disconnect drive from the Pogoplug and reconnect (easiest) or, b) disconnect the drive from the Pogoplug, connect it directly to main computer, delete the .cedata (hidden file) and then reconnect the drive to the Pogoplug... Exhausting!
I have the same issue. I use Lightroom files I exported to the pogo showed up no problem.
I also edited some files in Photoshop and then saved them to the pogoplug. These did not show up.
I ejected the drive using my.pogoplug.com, physically switched the drive off and on again then remounted the drive through my.pogoplug.com. This has resolved the issue and is still working after a recent synchronisation.
Synctoy used to work wonderfully before the last update. Now when I use synctoy, the thumbnails will not generate. As a workaround, I used the web feature to recreate all missing thumbnails and have stopped using synctoy with the Pogoplug. I am hopping that the next update fixes this problem.
GreenTapir:
I have the same problem with Synctoy. What is that web feature you used to recreate the missing thumbnails?
AC
I'm having a problem that's like the one described but with a twist.
Browsing the disk with the webmanagment screen (my.pogoplug.com) doesn't display thumb's and display's blank preview screens.
Here is the twist:
- when i'm on my lan and access my.pogoplug.com I can see everything.
- when I share a folder and view it (on external lan) I can see the pictures.
So to me it looks like a diference between internal LAN or External.
Any sugestions?
