Hi Pogopluggers.

Couldn't find an answer to this anywhere in the forum or FAQs.

Getting a public IP is difficult for me, so my router isn't visible from the internet.  Will Pogoplug work anyway (a bit like Simplify Media allows my iPhone to communicate with my iTunes...)

Thanks

Al

no, pogoplug does not require a static ip address.

The question relates to a "public ip" not whether the ip is static or dynamic !
Does anyone know the answer to this question ?

no, the pogoplug does not require a public ip address and can reside behind a standard router. of course your router needs a public ip address but as you know, it does not have to be static but can be one dynamically assigned by your isp.

the pogoplug uses the registration process to my.pogoplug.com to advertise it;s presence and give you access from outside your network. it creates an ipv6 tunnel.

But my router does NOT have a public ip address...the only public ip is on the other side of my isp's router....thus my router is assigned a private ip by my isp.

So...will the ipv6 tunnel allow my double natted system to be accessed from the net ?

Many fixed wireless ISPs use this configuration.

if your router gets the attached computers and devices to the internet, you should be fine.

however, I guess we won;t know unless you try it. from what I have read, the pogoplug doesn;t require any ports to be open. however if you can;t get connected, i'd say it's the double natting that is complicating matters and it is entirely possible that your ISP has the ability to block this service.

i think the registration process does the hard work for us-it uses your pogoplug's hardware mac address to communicate with my.pogoplug.com.

goodluck!
