I needed drive letter P: for another, hard-coded application. Since there is no way to choose which drive letter PogoPlug desktop software takes when it starts up, Support recommended setting up "dummy drives" (subst command or map network drive) to force PogoPlug to select a different drive letter.  That solution doesn't work well, since PogoPlug desktop worked for a day or so then disconnected and refused to connect until the dummy drive letter assignments were removed.

Example:

Setup Dummy Drive P:
Setup Dummy Drive Q:

Turn on PogoPlug desktop software for Windows XP 32 and PogoPlug takes R:

Come back a day later and all dummy drives are gone and PogoPlug desktop software refuses to connect until I reboot everything, then PogoPlug desktop software will connect but as P: again.

Any similar experiences and suggestions?

I have not really played with this much but if I do a

subst P: C:\temp
Start the pogolug drive and it grabs Q:
Run Subst P:\temp /d and remove the P: drive Pogo stays at Q: and I receive no errors access it.

Maybe the Pogoplug is rebooting overnight and losing its connect or something?

Yeah, the subst method is what I was using as well, but something is causing PogoPlug to go back and grab the P: at some point.

Shouldn't the subst assignments persist through a reboot or hibernate?

Guess, I'll keep watching it and hoping that drive letter assignment is a feature in new versions of the desktop software.

I am using ver 1.0.0.16, but unfortunately Map Network Drive crashes a Vista Home Edition PC.

The good news is that Pogoplus boots to R: drive as I already have P: & Q: drive assigned.

I then share R: drive as "Pogo"

When I use the "Map Network Drive" I get a blue screen of death :-(

This happens every time so it would be good to know if this is a reported bug.

Obviously a good workaround would be the ability for the pogoplus to assign a drive on boot.

baldwig, please send a support request to support@cloudengines.com with the details regarding your bsod. they will be quite interested to hear about this issue.

Hey Baldwig,

As I'm looking at this, I think I see your problem - you can't actually share the whole R: drive - you have to share the service (corresponding to the partitions on your drives) one by one. I have successfully set up mapped network drives for my drives between Vista and XP, transferred files, done syncing and backup, but trying to share with the whole of the P drive won't work for the same reason's you cannot defrag the P (or in your case, R) drive - http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/11675/Defragging-Drive-P/ for more details.

hope that helps!

OK - didn't know that - but I guess it makes sense that if you have more than one drive on the Pogoplug then it may not be able to have one drive letter across multiple drives - although that would be cool.

HOWEVER - I am still getting the BSOD with my R: drive after I share the actual names that Pogo provides for the drives OR even if I share a subdirectory of the Drive.

Have you tried to do your backup with Pogoplug as R: and not P:?
I can send the Minidumps if this is helpful.

BTW I also get the sporadic error at the top of this thread that Pogoplug tries to become P:, even if I have something that is already at P:. I solve by quitting Pogoplug app and then restarting - but not ideal.

Update on my BSOD issue:

I changed the Pogo PC program to run on an old XP Pro PC and managed to do the tasks above without a crash. I guess it must be a Vista issue !!

HOWEVER - the sporadic PogoPlug Drive assigning issue is still happening on XP.

Try this from a command prompt (as your own user, not administrator):

subst R: P:\

:) I hear a feature request coming out of this thread.

July 10, 2009 5:51 PM

Indeed :) the feature request I have listed is "user assignable drive letter for Pogoplug service" - sound about right?

Any idea if this will make it into version 2.xx of the driver?

This is indeed very important as a lot of people are using Pogoplug as a remote sync target.

Hope to see this feature soon.

Yes, Ialso need to be able to hard code or make static the mapped network drive. Pogoplug keeps requiring me to reload and then the drive letter changes on me. I use is as a media server for itunes movies across multiple home PCs. So I have to reimport all movies...
