Allow users to assign a drive letter of their choice when using the PogoPlug desktop software.

The current method (recommended by support) of mapping dummy drives to force PogoPlug to take the next available letter in the alphabet is kind of cludgy and tedious.

Additionally, it seems that PogoPlug occasionally ignore and/or takes over dummy drive letters that have been assigned to attempt to make it take a different drive letter (as recommended by Support).

Moving this to Support because even the dummy drive work-around seems to be failing.

I second this!

Seriously - not being able to 'user-specify' the drive letter, or at least keep it the same should be pretty high on bug fix / enhancement priority. You can't create shortcuts or do any automated backup without this. Seriously - how hard can this be?

As a new Pogoplug user, this seems to be a critial issue. I am running sync software between my server and my pogoplug drive, and keeping the drive mapping in tact is crucial.

November 20, 2009 8:07 PM

Yes, I agree with Steve56, drive mapping is crucial. I have my wife's computer set up to map to another computer that we store all the photos on. Its her P:. Now with the PogoPlug I can not install the software for the PogoPlug because it will not work with her drive mapping. Come on Cloud Engine. This should not be hard for you to fix. I know you have a scheduled update for when the new style PogoPlugs ship, but give us current users, the ones who bought them before ANY were available, a break and release the firmware update. It has this "select your drive letter" option, does it not?

For Windows users, we do have a workaround for specifying drive letters in Single Drive mode. Please write http://support.pogoplug.com/requests/anonymous/new for detailed instruction.

Chris, can't you just post a link to it? Why do we have to go through the hassle of contacting support for the instructions?

@MisterBleau

I just sent you a pm

No Chris, you don't get it! People don't want to have to contact you to get solutions to basic/critical freaking problems! I've had several email conversations with you where you send me answers to problems but never post them for everyone else's benefit - even when I've specifically suggested that you should do so. What gives? Do you enjoy wasting your customers' time?! (Not to mention your own.)

BTW - I have still not gotten the PogoPlug to have a consistent drive letter, but that hardly matters now because I've pulled the thing out of the wall.

I have multiple USB drives hooked up to Pogo plug and I to have the problem with my Sync software finding the constantly changing drive letters.

This is a great product except for the revolving drive letters.

If you use a tool like Process Explorer, you can see how they are mapping the drives using ppfs.exe. Just copy the command line for the drive(s) you want to map, change the letter to what you want, and put it in a bat file. You can run it on startup or manually.
ppfs.exe -l Q --valtoken ...
change to
ppfs.exe -l M --valtoken ...

Why doesn't pogoplug do this?

I thought I would post how I map drives on my Dockstar. Granted, it's a Dockstar, but if the Pogoplug has the equivalent stuff running maybe it will work there too(Samba?). I created a BAT file that runs on boot that contains "net use" commands like this:

net use Y: \\xxxxxxxxxx\WDBlack1TB

xxxxxxxxxx is the workgroup device name and how the device shows up when mapping a network drive in Windows and it will be different for everyone - mine is FADSxxxxxx - the x's are the last six digits of the MAC address, I believe. I'm not using the Pogoplug device mapping software - this lets me define the drive letter and keep it consistent. Hope this might help someone.

I should also mention this won't work if trying to mount the drives remotely - it's only for local use.

Yea ... this thread needs to be bumped up. My boss was really amp'd about Pogo until we found that we couldn't map the drives or assign a drive label. Now he's selling it on Craigslist unless we find a workaround. Plz help guys.

At present, there is a workaround that may work for you, please write Support and we'll try to help you out.

Hi all

This workaround is now published in our Support Knowledge Base http://support.pogoplug.com/entries/221784-how-do-i-assign-a-fixed-drive-lett...

Kind Regards
Christopher

The workaround posted does not work for me. I am on Windows 7 Professional 32bit. When I follow the instructions and click the shortcut to start the software it goes right back to a P drive.

Oddly enough I have a P drive with nothing in it that says 2TB of 4TB free. Why is that when I only have one 500GB drive attached?

October 7, 2010 8:59 PM

Hello all! Just received and installed my pogodrive tonight, and I would definitely throw my hat into the ring on this gripe. The directory letter assigned to any attached HDDs should remain static! Quite honestly, I'm shocked that the makers of pogodrive didn't think of this prior to this thread.

Hopefully the fix will be released soon, and not by posting a link instructing consumers of their product to 'submit a question.' Rather, just tell us all how to fix it straight out!

I've made reply on other similar threads, but will again here. Above Chris Louie (cloud engines) indicates a solution is available. Apparently some are claiming that this has worked for them and others not. I'm one of those that the solution is not working. I've 2 windows 7 64bit and 1 XP platform and I'm having the same problem assigning a fixed drive letter (and retaining after reboot) on any of the machines. FYI: PogoPlug has 3 external drives attached. So yes, please supply a solution across all platforms soon. Thank you, Nick

Hi I have win7 64bit I cannot assign a drive letter the way the guide says, when i try to make the shortcut on the desktop just keep getting this... The file C:\"C:\program files\pogoplug\ppfs.exe"-lf cannot be found
it does let me browse to the exe file.

December 1, 2010 8:13 PM

Apparently this is falling upon deaf ears.

Hey, Pogoplug, please support those who have supported you!

December 2, 2010 2:51 PM

ok folks i have had a reply back after emailing tech support , i have not yet had time to try it but here it is

Ray, Nov 30 12:08 pm (PST):
Hi Simon,

Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support. Please take these steps in Windows 7.

1. Right click on your desktop --> New --> Shortcut
2. Browse to the Pogoplug .exe file and select Next
3. Enter a name for the shortcut and select Finish
4. Right-click the new shortcut and select Properties
5. Add -l X to the target line. Where X is the desired drive letter. There should be a space between -l and the drive letter. Also, the -l is hyphen lower case L. It should look like this: "C:\Program Files\Pogoplug\ppfs.exe" -l K

I hope this helps. I'll close this ticket, but, let us know if you have any additional questions.

Best,
Ray

This is a deal breaker for me as I have software accessing that would be accessing these drives.

When will these "work arounds" become part ofthe product.  We shouldn't have to jump through hoops, writing BAT files for each machine connected to our network JUST to get Pogoplug device to statically map to a single drive letter and to assign static drive letters to the individual drives attached to the device.

Moderator:  when do we see user feedback pushed into development???  These are deal breakers if you want your device to be a viable solution in a business environment or even a serious media environment in the home!!!
