I tried using the software that comes with the Western Digital My Books. It seems like a simple enough program. It would not recognize the drive. It apparently looks only for USB connections in Vista.
Are you using third party backup software to protect the data on your Pogoplug? Here is the place to post your experiences and compatibility with backup software and the Pogoplug.

SyncToy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SyncToy worked for me on backing up a drive that has some locked files. I would recommend checking it out.

Here are a few I've tried that have worked (pretty basic backup / syncing, and once-a-day scheduling, nothing fancy):
SyncBack SE
Rich Copy
Allway Sync
Cobian
Robocopy

It was good, no complaints. I only run Windows in VirtualBox running on Ubuntu. The Windows VM running Allway Sync backed up fine. No issues. The app is very easy to setup and the GUI is nice. I would recommend it and no I don't work or am not affiliated with them. :)
I tried a few different tools but I found that few, if any would work to sync files to the PogoPlug. Most complained about errors when trying to get/set the timestamp on files.
I have successfully used SyncBackSE to backup the drives from the PogoPlug to another, locally attached USB device.
What about backing or syncing data from a PC to pogoplug? I have tried syncback and it fails (complaining about moving files). It works fine when backing up or syncing to a non-pogoplug destination. Anyone else experience that?
malhotra81,
If you haven't done this already, modify your backup profile and go to the Copy/Delete tab and uncheck "Make a safe copy". For whatever reason, the pogoplug doesn't like it.
Thanks John. As a matter of fact, I was reading the syncback forums (http://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=4713&sid=02088b6f26bf77430965... and found the same info (after posting the comment here, ofcourse). Disabling the 'safe copies' options did do the trick. However, the question for Pogoplug folks is - what in pogoplug is preventing the renaming of the files in the destination HDD ('safe copy' option in syncback copies a modified file from the source and copies it in the destination as a '.TMP' file and then renames it). This works OK to a non-pogoplug destination, so there's something in pogoplug that prevents an action - i'm assuming it's renaming. But ofcourse, renaming works manually in pogoplug, so I don't really know...
I have been trying to use Syncback Pro and SE versions, all have problems. Tried Goodsync, same situation. Puresync seems to work just fine but the software is not as sophisticated as Syncback. However, my biggest problem is speed, it is so slow, like backing up to cloud instead of a local drive. Anyone has this problem?
Recently, I tried to use Mac's Backup utility, which is available to MobileMe subscribers. However, I can't seem to get it to perform a successful backup. The moment I add the Pogoplug drive to the list of files to backup, I get a strange error message, as seen in the photo.

Just for fun, I tried to complete the backup anyway, and got the message below (from the Console error log):

This seems to happen whether I choose the entire Pogoplug drive to back up or individual folders within the Pogoplug.

With the latest update of the Pogoplug drive software (1.0.0.16), now SyncBack works perfectly so long as you have the "Safe Copy" option unchecked.
the same for me. When I try to synchronize with Handy backup I get file read errors on the Pogo plus
Using Allway Sync with no issues. Backing up hard drive on my laptop to a drive on my Pogo and also backing up a directory on one drive of the pogo to another drive on the pogo. Haven't had any issues other than when my mini pot belly pig unplugs my pogo ! Damn pig !
I installed my Seagate freeagent drive and then reinstalled the Seagate manager software and was hoping I could back up my Vista laptop to the Freeagent using the Seagate Manager software that comes with it. But it doesn't recongzine the drive.
I've got pogoplug for Windows running and the drive shows up fine on windows and I was able to install directly from the pogoplug attached freeagent drive, but no visibility to the Seagate Manager. Am I sol?

I have had so much trouble with Seagate's FreeAgent drives, 2 of them, all 1TB each. Since I switched to a different brand and everything is OK, no trouble backing up and getting recognized. I don't know if this is because FreeAgent's design, firmware or what. The only thing I know is that it is not compatible somehow.
Never had good luck with FreeAgent. Had trouble before when connected to a Linksys NAS unit. I would try a different brand to see if there is any difference.
It seems there are two different types of backup discussions going on here, and I think both are absolutely valid ways of handling your data. Some people are backing up the data from their computer backing it up to the pogoplug. Others are backing up the data from their pogoplug to an offsite online backup service. I'm doing the latter to protect my data in case of fire or theft or something, but both are valid and useful ways of doing things. Just thought I'd point that out.
I have been using Spideroak successfully to backup the data from my pogoplug as well as my computer to their online site. They encourage backing up from multiple computers to one account, because they charge for the amount of data you back up. I think it's basically $10/month per 100 GB of data. And they're smart about not backing up duplicate copies of the same file. Plus they provide version history so you can go back to a previous version when you mess something up. That saved me just this weekend when we had the same file open on two computers and both saved it and the file got corrupted.
I am thinking of just putting one of my Pogoplugs at a relatives house to eliminate the problem of fire or theft. This would be a geographically close relative so I can go there in case of problems. Anyone else doing something like that?

I keep my pogoplug at my house just because I have a better net connection than most of my family and it also makes it a lot easier when bulk copying data locally (PogoPlug will optimize local connections). I then use SyncBack to periodically copy some of my important data (pictures and music) from my PogoPlug to another drive. About once a month I swap that backup drive with one I keep at my office. So in the event of fire/theft, I have an off-site backup at my office that is at most 1 month old.

I tried to use Sbackup in Ubuntu Jaunty but it cannot see the link. Something to do with fuse?
Has anyone had any luck creating a restore point of their computer to their pogo drive? I tried using Norton Ghost, but I get an error about 1 minute into the process. I would like to have a restore point on my pogo drive, not just a backup by copying files with windows explorer.
I mount the pogo using sshfs:
sshfs#root@pogoplug:/tmp/.cemnt/mnt_sda1 /mnt/sshtest/ fuse rw,allow_other,reconnect 0 0
then backup using Back In Time. Works like a charm.
