Hi, is there a way to change the desktop drive icon? The usual ways (pasting into Info, CandyBar) don't seem to work. Thanks!

Well yes there is. Oddly enough this is one of the first things I figured out how to do because the pink icon on my desktop bothered me from from the get go.

The first thing you need to do is create a .icns file. The easiest way to do this I have found on a Mac is to select a file or folder whose icon you want to use, open the Get Info screen, and select the image and choose copy from the edit menu.

Once you have the image copied to the clipboard, open your preview app and choose new from clipboard from the file menu. What opens will be the icon you just copied.

Choose save from the file menu and the resulting saved file will be a .icns file. At some point the file will need to be named Application.icns. You can do this now or later.

I realize you may already know how to do this, but I added the process for others who read this and do not.

Now to change the pogoplug icon.

Right click on the pogoplug app in your applications folder and choose show package contents. This will open another finder window that has a contents folder.

Click on contents and then resources. In the resources folder you will see the pink icon named Application.icns.

Replace that Application.icns file with the one you created. Close the finder window.

At this point you need to restart your computer. Quiting and restarting the app doesn't seem to do it. Once you restart your computer and mount your pogoplug, you should see your new icon.

One other thing, you will have to do this same process every time there is an update to the desktop app as the new download contains the original .incs file. Hopefully in the future updates will happen without having to replace the app. Let me know if you have any other questions about this and I'll try to help.

Thank you so much, that is hugely helpful. I actually did everything there, EXCEPT restart the computer after I changed the application.icns. I just restarted the app, saw nothing happened, and got flummoxed. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Chad, Thanks for the thorough information regarding changing the .icons from pink to anything! I followed your details right down to the restart but I keep getting the blasted pink icons. Any further help you might offer would be appreciated. I wonder if something has changed since your posting in 2009 - Having said that, I've used this same process on several other apps, all of which have worked.

HELP! I despise the pink volume icons... SirDennis

This fix no longer works... Has anyone figured out how to fix it now?

The icons that need to be replaced are now in a hidden folder within the package. Here's a link to another thread on how to change them now.
