I read this article on how much a security nightmare "Cloud Computing" can be.

This is one of the reason I like to maintain my own personal cloud at home on my Pogoplug.

Cloud computing is awesome and I think it's only going to get better. I currently use a cloud computing service to sync data in folders across my computers and it's been working OK so far.

But, I can replace that with my (soon to be arriving) Pogoplug and save myself the monthly fee, get a ton more storage, and retain control over my data! Which is the best part :)

I read the same article and I'm excited both about the future of cloud computing and of technologies like PogoPlug. Security is always a concern. However, I think it's important to understand that just because you have physical control of the drive with PogoPlug, the exposure of that data is still at the mercy of PogoPlug's infrastructure. I would like to hear more about how PogoPlug helps to ensure the security of data shared through its service.

I would also like to know more about how our access is secured. You can use SSL within a web browser but an E-mail to PogoPlug support confirmed the the iPhone app doesn't yet support SSL.

I am slightly confused. You can log in to mypogoplug.com over SSL (https), but once you are logged in, the site switches back to http. I have just installed a packet capture tool, and the packets I am sniffing show my filenames in clear text, presumably if I started to download a file it would be in clear as well?

Do I have to install Plugapps and get everything over SSL in order to do secure file transfer?

Sophie, there's a setting in the Security tab (in Settings) to keep you logged in over ssl all the time. There's always a tradeoff with speed using ssl so we made an option to work both ways.
