The easiest way I have seen is the RSS feed program. It works extremely easily and fast.

Once it is setup all you have to do is give the URL to anyone and anytime you update the files they can see them immediately.
Check out the Introduction to RSS Feeds on Pogoplug here. http://www.pogoplugged.com/article/11393/Introduction-to-RSS-Feeds-on-Pogoplug/ and how to set it up.

Really would like more functionality for those I share with as to folders, instead of single-file uploads which are onerous. Can a user I've shared with, (and I've checked the box to allow them to upload), be given ability to download the Drive app on their PC, without being a pogoplug owner themselves? I can't see how, unless I "loan" them my password and e-mail which I do not want to do. The single-file upload is a sticking point in many situations.

How about a solution to this. Maybe with a total size limit as to what an authorized/shared uploading correspondent could upload at a time...but please, FOLDERS capable...

I have discovered that the people you share files with can set up their own account using the email address you used for sharing. They can create their own password, download the desktop software, and view their shared files as a drive. At least it works on my Mac. You can test it yourself by sharing files to a second email address you have access to. When you go online to access the files there is a link to set up an account. It's a very cool feature.

@dougzv

Thanks for the tip. I am going to look at that now on Windows.

Is there any way to limit the bandwidth that the pogoplug program uses for uploads (or anything else for that matter)? I want to share linux disk images as direct download links, but I still want to be able to access my network when other people are downloading these files.

This is good to know.  I'll be trying it out when I get mine up and running.

Limiting bandwidth would definitely be a good feature to have.  We still have to keep in mind the other people on our network.

You can limit bandwidth on a lot of routers. But you probably don't need to. The Pogoplug can only use your upload bandwidth that you receive from your ISP. Most folks have around 1,000 to 2,000 Kbps up. That barely taxes your router so affecting what you are doing at home or on your local LAN wouldn't be a problem.

The only time you may see any issues is if you are trying to upload something on your computer at the same time as your pogoplug is uploading.

It would be very helpful to make the Pogoplug a multi-user device, allowing the registered user to administer the Pogoplug-attached disk(s) in order to set up permissions on at least a folder-level basis for the users the folders are shared with. I want to set up the Pogoplug so that my wife, son, and daughter can each have read/write/delete access to their own folder(s), recursively within that folder of course. To accomplish this now, I have to set each of their logins up with my username/password, which I'd rather not do.

If I understand what you are asking correctly, you want your family members to only be able to see and edit what you have shared with them. For instance, a file with their name on it that they have full access to. You can do this easily.
They can each have their own account and only see the files/folders that you decide to share with them. To do this, after you share a folder with them, there is a link for them to set up their own account once they visit the pogoplug sight to view their shared items. Once they set up an account, you can use their account info with the desktop software and that will produce a drive containing only what you have shared with them. See my post from May 12.

Thanks for the reply. I would like them not only to access the files/folders but to also be able to write to those folders from their user accounts. I just tried sharing a folder with my wife as a test, logged in to her email got the link, set up a Pogoplug drive on her user account, and successfully uploaded a file. I think the first time I tried this, I just didn't see the files because I didn't eject the Pogoplug drive and re-mount - really need a Refresh command in the mac menubar app.

Thanks again, I'm glad file uploading is definitely working for shared users.

I just wish you could prompt the user to create a new password first, rather than just have a url that's wide open. At least there's a little security if the user creates a password, preventing someone else that pry's into their mailbox later from poking around ...

I just shared out a couple directories with some friends and they had to create a password before they could access the directory. This was with upload rights so maybe you are referring to just read access to the directory.

Yes, you're right Jason.  I was referring to the read-only sharing, but I guess this isn't much different than other sites, I just get a little paranoid ... :)

Here's a very specific use:
I work with a choir that sings to pre-recorded music. Currently the
members get a CD to take home, listen to, and practice with. To
eliminate the CD's, I was hoping to let them download .MP3 files from
the 'Plug.
Rather than send 50 invitations (or have 50 accounts created only for
read-only access), I wanted to send a single read-only invitation to a
second e-mail address of my own and embed that link onto an unadvertised
web page.
My experiment seemed to work for about two weeks and then I started
getting error messages with the word "expired" in them (and of course, I failed to write down the message!). Is there a time limit on how long a link will function and can I adjust that limit?

August 10, 2009 10:01 PM

Malcolm,
Use the RSS feed option for that. I would give you an example of how to do so but right now I am doing some testing that won't allow me to.

Just put the MP3 in its own folder then share it and select the RSS feed icon. Give that link to everyone in a group email and away they go.

I agree with MRB about having the option for a password option even for the read only shared directories. I don't want a publically accessible share even if it is read only. I share pictures with my family member and I wouldn't want just anyone to see them. We do have one malicious ex-family member who has been causing issues and a password read-only share would make me feel safer.

Finaly figured out the secret for sharing folders. Now I need to know how I can get the personal message to display in the email all I get is a link to Pogo no sign of a message

that sounds good except that link you refer to doesn't work - it's dead.

March 18, 2010 3:19 PM

Sounds like something to contact support about. I just tried it and you're right, the link doesn't even send you anywhere. I just sent an email to
support about this, I'll let you know what they say.

March 18, 2010 4:27 PM updated: March 18, 2010 4:28 PM

OK, heard back from support (talk about quick, only about 1 hour) and all i needed to do was clear my browser cache. Actually, when I tried it again, the link worked in Firefox, but not in Internet Explorer 7 but clearing the cache fixed it. Hope this works for you. If it doesn't, contact support. They are very responsive.

brandon, do you have any ideas on how to work around this dead link issue and setup a shared user manually somehow?

March 18, 2010 5:56 PM

@peterD,
Not sure what you mean by dead link.
Are you referring to the question in this thread?
http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/11925/Multiple-users-one-pogo-plug/#4100

Or something else?

Maybe I have the wrong impression, but what I thought was being referred to was the link for the person you share with to set up an account so they can use the desktop app. It is located at the top of the browser window that opens and gives you access to the shared file after you click the link that is emailed to you. So what I did on my PC at work using IE7 was share a file to my work email, then I clicked the link in my email to take me to the shared file which worked, but I was unable to click on the create an account link at the top of that screen. I emailed support and they suggested clearing the browser cache. I then followed the email link again to the shared file and I was then able to follow the link. Of course I might be talking about a completely different thing than peterD.
