Categories: Pogoplug Hardware News
The folks at Cloud Engines have been listening to each and every one of you on our forums and the massive Internets, and are stepping forward with some exciting news today. First of all, one of the most popular requests - a wireless Pogoplug - has been granted, with the release of the Pogoplug Wireless Adapter. This little guy, a USB b/g/n wireless adapter, allows you to easily connect your Pogoplug to your network.

What's more, if you already own a Pogoplug, you can get one of these bad boys for free as a "thank you" from Cloud Engines. It's a limited time offer, so make sure that if you want one, that you check out the details on Pogoplug's Facebook or support pages on how to get a promo code.

Original Press Release:
Pogoplug is giving people what they want. Our customers have bombarded us with requests to add wireless connectivity to the Pogoplug, and we heard the message, loud and clear. Starting today, anyone can pre-order the Pogoplug Wireless Extender that makes any existing Pogoplug fully WiFi-enabled. Now users can place the Pogoplug anywhere in their homes without having to permanently connect it to a network router or wired Ethernet port.
The Pogoplug Wireless Extender is compatible with all previous versions of Pogoplugs and the recently announced Pogoplug Biz. Other recent improvements we’ve added to the Pogoplug include cloud printing, the updated Pogoplug Android application, the ability to share and collaborate on documents directly on the Pogoplug, and a very simple system of email upload. We are constantly striving to make the Pogoplug even better, and we would love to hear what your experience has been and how we can improve it. Keep sending those emails!
The Pogoplug Wireless Extender will work on 802.11 b/g/n networks and is available for pre-order now for $29.
In addition to the introduction of the new Wireless Extender, we are reducing the price of the current Pogoplug from $129 to $99.
Because of this price move and as a thank you to existing Pogoplug owners there is a special limited time offer; any existing owner of a Pogoplug can receive a promo code to get the new Wireless Adapter for free. To find out how, visit our Facebook page or our website support page.
The standard model Pogoplug can be ordered starting today for $99 at www.pogoplug.com.

Likely because of the price drop and the introduction of the wireless adapter, Buy.com is selling the Pogoplug (POGO-E02) for $47.99 today (August 17, 2010) with free standard shipping (thank you, CNET Cheapskate blog!). Be aware that Cloud Engines' free wireless adapter offer will not apply, as it only covers Pogoplugs ordered before today.
(Update 8/19/2010) And they're gone…
Hmm, I liked the idea at first, but after having just received my free code, it appears one needs to pay between 12-27$ for shipping? pogoplug, could we get a more economical shipping option, like ground, USPS first class mail or something? Seems like quite a premium even for a free device.
I agree. For example, they could use Priority Mail flat-rate boxes for $4.85 each ($4.75 each, if the adapter and its packaging would fit into a flat-rate envelope). And first-class mail would probably run under a dollar, given that the adapter will weigh a couple of ounces at most.
Yeah, I'm going to wait a while and see how this shakes out. Silly to pay so much for shipping these days (unless of course it is a profit center for seller in general)
Admittedly, Cloud Engines is using standard UPS shipping: $12 is in the right neighborhood for shipping a 1-pound package by ground, and that price includes tracking and insurance. But there are alternatives, like UPS' Mail Innovations service that puts final delivery in the hands of the U.S. Postal Service. Amazon.com makes heavy use of that for their "Super Saver" shipping option when applied to small items, I've noticed.
It's shipping and handling. Handling is the cost encoured by Cloud systems to fulfill your order (either direct payroll or paying a fulfillment company). The product is free. Entering the order, packaging materials, payroll and shipping all enter into it.

About the "handling fee." Why was I able to order the PogoPlug last November with $8.69 for shipping. It is bigger and heavier. Now this little dongle is costing $12.41. It seems that they might be upping the handling fee since it is free.
I would be interested to see if there is a ~$6 option after the 8/31 deadline has passed.
Just got mine today. Hurray!! can't wait to try. Now I can put my pogo and drives anywhere in the house.
