Pogoplug Adds Streaming to XBOX360 & PS3, Active Copy Enhancements

Yet again, the Pogoplug continues to get more and more useful... as if you didn't love it enough already, of course.  To kick things off, are you a gamer?  Own one of those shiny XBOX360 or PlayStation 3 consoles?  How would you like to watch your movies, listen to your music, and flip through your digital photos without leaving your gaming chair?  Now you can, with Pogoplug's streaming support for these consoles.  Your PS3 or 360 should automatically detect drives on a local Pogoplug or on other shared Pogoplugs.

Speaking of shared Pogoplugs, Active Copy got an upgrade today as well.  Now you can copy "key" files from your local Pogoplug to another remotely located Pogoplug, for redundant, safe backups.

Watch for your Pogoplug to download the new firmware update today - we bet you can't wait to check out the new functionality!  If you're interested in reading the original press release, you can find it below.

Pogoplug™ Launches Media Streaming and Offsite Backup

San Francisco, Calif. – March 16th, 2010 – Pogoplug, the multimedia sharing device that allows users to access their media anywhere on the web, today adds two new features to the award-winning device. Starting today, Pogoplug users can stream content to Xbox 360 and PS3 game consoles. The enhanced Active Copy feature now automatically copies files to a Pogoplug in another location.

With game console support, Pogoplug owners can now easily access, share, and stream their media directly to their Xbox 360 or PS3 from any local or remotely located Pogoplug. Gamers can watch home movies from their Pogoplug connected external hard drive on their Xbox 360 or PS3, share slideshows or listen to their entire music library without ever putting down their game controller. The Xbox 360 or PS3 automatically sees the drives connected to the Pogoplug and the contents of other shared Pogoplugs.

"By adding media streaming capabilities to the Xbox 360 and PS3 through your Pogoplug, we are making it easier than ever to access your media on your television," said Daniel Putterman, Cloud Engines CEO. "The new version of Active Copy is revolutionary. Now anyone can easily keep a safe copy of their files in another location."

Active Copy enables users to backup folders on their computer to a Pogoplug connected drive. Whenever new files are added, or changes are made to an existing file within the Active Copy enabled folder, these files are automatically copied to a chosen destination folder. Now users can also use Active Copy to automatically backup key files from one Pogoplug to another off-site Pogoplug, for additional safety and redundancy.

Both features came from user requests and both update to all Pogoplugs worldwide via an automatic firmware upgrade today.

I'm much more interested in the new off-site Active Copy. that should have its own PR! Where do I find out more about that? For example, can I have it active copy only on off-business hours? Does the off-site unit have to have the exact same disk setup/space etc? Is there a file size limit? What happens if the copy fails half-way through?

Thanks,

Here, here! I'll second that! I'm very interested in the Active Copy but don't care about the other part of the announcement.

Active Copy doesn't have scheduling. But once the original copy is done there is not much overhead if you are just using it to copy over changed files.
Does the off-site unit have to have the exact same disk setup/space etc?
Nope, no restrictions. Just has to have a place (folder) to copy to.
Is there a file size limit?
Not that I am aware of.
What happens if the copy fails half-way through? Thanks,
If a file was saved that was not completed then the file size would be smaller than the original file. In that case the copy program should see that the filesize in the original file is different than the size of the one on the destination drive and copy the original file over.

I have the update, but does anyone know how to get this to stream on the Xbox360 or PS3? I don't see anything in the help docs.

March 17, 2010 10:13 PM

I am having trouble as well finding any documentation on streaming from my pogoplug to XBOX or PS3.

Would appreciate any help or links with information. It does not appear that it is recognized on the same network automatically, so what steps need to be taken to setup this function?

Log on to my pogoplug.com

Under Settings then Media settings you  find a tick box.  You need to enable the streaming before it can be used.

Thanks So much Gavin, that was exactly what I was looking for, I must have missed it.

A note to anyone with similar issue, be sure to reset/clear your browsers cache before visiting your site at mypogoplug.com, some changes did not appear for me because of this.

How do you control what gets streamed? I don't want all my .avi to appear in "Movies". And I don't want to have to "de-select" them as I have hundreds. I rather select what I want viewable on the XBOX or iPhone..
Thanks

This update no longer working, I had the pogoplug streaming to the WDTV and the PS3, but just as soon as it was able to do this, it has now stopped, pogoplug is complete crap as far as im concerned, and I would advise against buying, customer support is is useless too

Hi @Alan1966

Which firmware version is your Pogoplug running?

We did resolve streaming in version 2.5.4, which we have begun rolling out to Pogoplug's in the wild. Please contact Support, (if you haven't already), so we can check the status of your update.

Kindest Regards

Glad to see someones questions get answered here.

October 15, 2010 9:01 PM

Days later, has anyone seen the mythical 2.5.4 version update and does it work?

October 15, 2010 10:10 PM

check the bottom right of your general setting screen :

UI Version: 2.5.4
Service Version: 2.5.4

personally it ain't magic cause i'm still disappointed in pogo.

do not check the bottom of your general setting screen (that is the web interface and not the firmware of your pogoplug); the firmware is listed on the general setting screen under "your pogoplugged enabled devices" with the firmware beside the name of your pogoplug unit. While my UI version and Service Version reads 2.5.4, my pogoplug still reads 2.5.3 and still does not media stream!

Hi @gkohle

I don't think I was clear.

The firmware version which resolves this issue is 2.5.4, UI and Service are unrelated to this.

Before this latest update, or maybe before the one before that, I was able to stream not only to my ps3, I was also able stream to my WDTV Live media player, so as far as im concerned the pogoplugs flexibility has been decreased, how can these firmware upgrades be classed as upgrades if its functionality has decreased, when are pogoplug going to support the WDTV Live box ?

Yup - my bad

October 20, 2010 1:57 PM

Streaming from Pogoplug to PS3 used to work like a charm...for maybe a week after I bought my pogoplug. 2.5.3 broke it and it's been like 3 weeks and it is still not working. My general settings-> shows 2.5.3 at the moment.

Maybe I need to pray and my pogoplug will update itself to 2.5.4?

Guys at pogoplug do you have a monkey dealing with the firware upgrades? In which case it might be a good idea to let the users upgrade themselves?

November 2, 2010 9:46 AM

Finally latest update 2.5.6 fixed all my PS3 streaming issues. All works fine now like it used to.
