Pogoplug PRO Review: Same Great Features... Plus More

If you've been watching the community, local Best Buy stores, or virtually any tech blog on the wide span of the Internet, you may have heard of the Pogoplug PRO.  A new member of the family, the PRO takes a good thing, puts it in a new suit, and adds wireless capability right out of the box.  Is the PRO right for you?  Read on.

What is the Pogoplug PRO?

To the uninitiated, the Pogoplug is a combination of a Pogoplug device you connect to your local network (LAN) that allows you to share your files throughout your home and anywhere you have access to an Internet browser, including mobile phones - and the My.Pogoplug web client, a service provided by Pogoplug at no charge.  My.Pogoplug is the software, accessible from anywhere with your login info, from which you can stream and access your data.  There's a lot more, too - here are some of the highlights:

  • PC and Mac integration with Pogoplug Drive
  • Active Copy backup system
  • Post to Twitter and Facebook
  • Remote printing
  • Tons more

If you're looking for the lowdown on Pogoplug's full feature set, our community is a great place to learn about it.  You can start with the review of the V2 Pogoplug (on which the Pogoplug PRO is based) and our Pogoplug FAQ.  Remember - essentially, the feature set of the Pogoplug PRO is the same as the V2 Pogoplug.

Pogoplug PRO vs. Regular Pogoplug

"Ok," you're probably wondering, "why would I want the PRO versus the regular Pogoplug?"  There are two major differences with the PRO.

Wireless connectivity is included: First of all, the Pogoplug PRO has wireless capability baked right in.  Of course, the standard Pogoplug can be connected via wireless, but you need to purchase a separate USB dongle to do so - meaning that you will lose one of your built-in ports.

The Pogoplug PRO is a different color:  Since the very beginning, our forums have been alive with discussion on the Pogoplug's color.  The bright pink plumage of the original Pogoplug has caused quite a stir: some people love it, others loathe it.  You can put me in the "love it" club, I think it's pretty cool how it stands out on my desk, and it's very unique.  Now, if it had purple sparkley stars and unicorns on it, that would be a different story.  But it doesn't. Which is good.

No matter, though, some folks simply hate the pink, and the folks at Pogoplug have listened - so the Pogoplug PRO sports a slick new black exterior - perfect for blending in with the rest of your electronics.

Is the Pogoplug PRO right for me?

Well, that depends.  Let me ask you a few questions, and we'll see!

#1. Do you hate pink, or just prefer to have your electronics blend together?

If yes, then the Pogoplug PRO is right for you - unless you are using specifically for business use (see #3)

#2. Do you absolutely need a wireless connection?

If so, then the Pogoplug PRO is a good choice, given that wireless connectivity is built in, saving you a port and the trouble of using a separate dongle.

#3. Do you plan on using the Pogoplug in a business environment?

If yes, then you might want to check out the Pogoplug Biz, which also features the black exterior but a whole slew of additional features specifically for business users.

Conclusions

All in all, the Pogoplug PRO is a welcome addition to the family, and is a great way for non-business users to experience Pogoplug with wireless built in and in a more understated color.

I recently purchased the Pro unit and it has fit my needs but with a couple of quirks.

(1) I first connect the Ethernet port to my router. Works fine. Then I connect it to my wireless router. I entered the SSID and key and it connects fine. However, when I go to settings and under "Wireless Settings" I do NOT
see the name of my wireless routed listed. The only option I see is "refresh list" which does nothing and "Other" but it will ask me the name again to join.
So, how do I see the name of my wireless router listed?

(2) Once the wireless is enabled and connected how do I DISABLE it? This is usefull if I'm in a wired environment and dont want to enable both wired and wireless to my router. It seemed to create problem with my wireless network.

I read your post above.

I just purchase the new Pogoplug Video. I mainly need it for having a local drive for my files. Video streaming was a nice to have feature.

It work well for file sharing and local drive. The problem is the fan of the Video model is so noisy that I cannot support it. So I will return the device where I bought it.

To replace it, I'm thinking to buy the previous generation of Pogoplug (pink model) like this one:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=557...

Now my question is: Does that pink device give me the same functionality than the latest version of the Pogoplug model, like this one http://www.pogoplug.com/products-pogoplug.html except the Wireless?

Do you know if they keep supporting the v2 firmware or if it gots the same features as the latest Pro firmware?

Thanks

Alex

There was a youtube video with an executive from Pogoplug describing new features and indicating that a model of the pogoplug device could transcribe "on the fly" using some added chipset or processor.

What model pogoplug device can do this 'on the fly' and not require external transcoding

In the product comparisons and discussions, it seems that "on the fly" transcoding is not mentioned.

@Jeff92677--the unit they were referring to was the Pogoplug Video, which has since been discontinued in a recall. I would give the Pogoplug Desktop software a try, as it will use your (much more powerful) processor in your PC to do the transcoding.

I just purchased the pogoplug and added 80,000 songs to the external hard drive, so that i could play my music at work. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to click every song manually for them to play. I wish there was a way to select all, so that I don't have to spend days clicking each individual song. Can anyone help:

Hi All,

Just got the pogoplug pro and of course right to the forums I go.

Couple questions:

1.) Is there a way to make the drives connected to the pogoplug available over my local network so that I can backup my local drives to pogoplug drives?

2.) Is there a way to edit sharing permsissions so that I can give people control EXCEPT for "share" and "delete". Essentially allowing users to view, upload, and download, but not delete?

3.) I forget what 3 was, I guess Ill post later.

Thanks,

M-------

Cloud Engines Inc.

October 24, 2011

To Whom It May Concern,

In 2010 I purchased a PogoPlug Pro device from Best Buy. Both the sales person and the advertisement on the packaging stated that I would have "Free Lifetime Service, No Fees, No Limits." Both the PogoPlug package and the sales person made it clear that all of my music, video, pictures and files would be available to me across the web for both streaming and downloading and uploading. It appears that now that you have improved your software you are putting restriction on people with older accounts and charging these older customers to regain the access and functionality that was available under their older accounts. You are now asking me and all PogoPlug Pro owners to purchase a $29 software upgrade to regain the functionality that we were promised when we purchased your product. I feel it is a bad business practice for Cloud Engines Inc. not to hold up their end of the promise they made to early purchasers and supporters of your product. I have retained the original packaging which came with the PogoPlug Pro I purchased in 2010 and all the features and promises are clearly stated on the box. The package promise full streaming capabilities for the lifetime of the product there is no mention of possibility of losing functionality or access to my files as Cloud Engines Inc. improves on its products and software. I feel it would only be appropriate for Cloud Engines Inc. to review their policy regarding this matter and to have all accounts upgraded to the Premium version that where created with Cloud Engines Inc.'s promise of full streaming capabilities for the lifetime of the product.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter and I would appreciate a quick and thorough response. I am prepared to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and am also prepared to contact an attorney regarding this matter if this matter goes unanswered or unresolved.
