How to Set Up the Custom User Interface Settings on Pogoplug Biz
Categories: Pogoplug Team
Having the ability to set up your own custom interface for your Pogoplug Biz is where you find that your investment in it really pays off.
Setting up your interface allows you to create a look that matches your business and an additional way to share files in a professional manner.
Here is why. With the Biz's Custom User Interface settings you can;
- You can specify the colors of the interface to match your business color scheme.
- You can replace the Pogoplug logo with one of your own.
- You can specify an image for the background instead of just using colors.
- You can create a special domain name to access your Pogoplug. That way instead of accessing your Pogoplug using my.pogoplug.com users can click on something like 'myfiles.mydomain.com'
- You can specify a Favicon to replace the Pogoplug Favicon that matches your website or business.
- You can use your logo in any email that your Pogoplug sends regarding shared or updated files.
Naturally in order to do all of this you need to set some things up before hand. So let's go through these setup steps. You may not need or have the ability to do all of them but these features are there now or if you ever need them in the future.
Before you begin
There are a few things to think about before you even start setting up your custom user interface.
- If you want to use a favicon or a custom logo you will have to create and save them to a drive that is plugged into your Pogoplug Biz. Since the Pogoplug Biz has several USB ports I recommend you invest in a small USB thumb drive to save these files on. Doing this will save you from any worry losing any settings or information if you need to pull a hard drive from service for maintenance or have any concern about these files having public access. Using a thumb drive you don't have to worry about a regular hard drive spinning up just to show your logo or Favicon too. You will see why after we get into the details on how it all works.
- The logo you would use for your personal Pogoplug page is recommended to be 165 pixels by 35 pixels. Any other size will be formated to this. You will need to create this logo before you can use it.
- If you want to use a Favicon then you first should be aware of what that is and how to create it. Favicons are the little icons that show next to bookmarks and in the address bar of most browsers. Favicons are 16 pixels square. If you run a website then you already know what a Favicon is but if you are not familiar with them I suggest you just Google 'What is a Favicon' and you quickly see what they are and how to create them
Now that you have created a favicon and your logo, you need to decide where to put them and then upload them to that drive. Now you are ready to go to the next step.
You would click on 'Settings' and then 'Custom UI Settings'

As shown, you then would select the Pogoplug you want these settings to be applied to. If you only have one Pogoplug Biz, then you are only given that choice. If you have multiple Pogoplug Biz units, then you can choose which one the settings apply to.
Once you are in the Custom User Interface setting,s you are shown quite a few options. It can look overwhelming at first, but once you go through them they become easy to understand.
Lets go though this one by one.
Here are all the options you are shown.

Setup your Logo
Your logo will be shown on the main page of your personalized My.pogoplug.com site. It is also the logo that is included in every email you may send via your personalized pogoplug site.
If you have done the previous setup of you logo on a thumb drive, then all you need to do is click on' Choose' and then the actual Logo filename.

Then click OK and your logo should be shown next to your settings as you can see here with my Logo.

Setup a Logo click link.
When your Pogoplug Biz sends out an email notification with your logo in it you can select a website that the logo is linked to. DOing this allows anyone the ability to click on the logo and they go you your website.
To set this up just enter your website's URL, like this, here.

Setup a Color Scheme
You can also setup an individualized color scheme for your Pogoplug Biz site.
You can choose your own text and background colors.

The easiest way to do this is to use the "Choose" option and pick the color from the pop-up color chart.

But if have a particular website or business color that you want to match identically use can use the HTML color code numbers that match yours.
You can also choose to use a background image instead of a particular color. This gives you a lot of options for personal customization but take note that the background image will be tiled and you may need to play with it some to make everything look correct. You would do this by selecting a background that you have previously saved on your Pogoplug drive.
Specify Domain name
You can choose to use a custom domain name and favicon for your URL (ex. www.myname.com) instead of accessing your Pogoplug from the default my.pogoplug.com. If you specify a custom domain, all share notification emails will be sent using links to this domain. To enable your custom domain and also your favicon, you must add a CNAME record to your domain's DNS settings, so that your domain (ex. www.myname.com) is pointing to my.pogoplug.com.
If you have access to your DNS settings via a cPanelX type program or something similar setting up a CNAME record is done by just going into your DNS Zone Editor and entering the name that a someone would use to go to your personalized Pogoplug site and then the real address.

Then in the Pogoplug user Interface Settings enter your custom domain name as a URL instead of accessing your Pogoplug using my.pogoplug.com. All share notifications will be sent using links to your domain. To enable your domain, you must add a CNAME record to your domain's DNS settings so that your domain points to https://my.pogoplug.com. Do not prepend your domain with http://

Setup Favicon
If you already created and uploaded a Favicon to your Pogoplug then all you need to do is to choose it from where you saved it.
Click on 'Choose' and then the Favicon's filename.

That's it - you have created and setup your personalized site, emails and addresses. Just remember that your logo and other images that you choose above will always be served from your Pogoplug enabled device. Once you choose these images for your custom user interface, you must not move, rename, or delete them from your Pogoplug enabled device, or else they will fail to display.
