How to Use Pogoplug's Cloud Printing Feature

Pogoplug has recently announced a brand new way to manage documents over the web - printer connectivity and even remote printing to a shared printer on a remote Pogoplug.  This feature works whether the printer is connected to your LAN or directly to your Pogoplug via USB, and is compatible with HP and Epson printers (post-2005.)

How To Enable Pogoplug Printing

First, of course, you'll need to connect the printer to your LAN and ensure that it can be seen by your computer - alternatively, you can connect the printer directly to the Pogoplug via USB.  (If you have a v1 Pogoplug, you can use a USB hub to connect more than one device.)

Next, go to the account settings screen and click on "Print Settings" on the left.  You'll see an option to enable printer discovery - do this.

Once this is enabled, and assuming you have a supported printer, it should now show up in the left column in your connected devices.

How To Print To A Pogoplug Connected Printer

Once your printer is enabled, connected, and detected by the Pogoplug, you're ready to start printing.  It's very simple!

fClick on a document.  See that little print icon that wasn't there before?  Click it.

A dialog box will come up with various printing options, something you might be familiar with if you've done lots of printing before.  Note that you can select from a list of printers - this is important if you have other Pogoplug connected printers (remote or otherwise) that are shared with you or on your network.  Select the appropriate printer, hit print, and the magic should begin.

How To Share Your Pogoplug Connected Printer

Sharing the printer is easy too.  All you have to do is click on the device and turn on sharing, then invite users to share the printer with - in almost exactly the same way you already share files and folders.

Your recipient will get an email notifying of the printer that was shared with you.  In this case, a printer connected to my friend's Pogoplug was just shared with me - I printed out a document stored on my Pogoplug on his printer.  It was pretty cool to hear his printer starting to spool up - over the phone - not even 2 seconds after pushing the print button.

Questions?

Overall, Pogoplug's cloud printing feature delivers quite nicely.  It works well for both local and remote printing and uses a sharing method that will already be familiar to the majority of Pogoplug users out there, and extremely welcoming and simple for those new to Pogoplug.

If you have questions, please post them in our forums!

Hi, can't click the printer-discovery check-box.
Any ideas why? Pogoplug's updated printer is on and plugged in.

Thanks, Flo

@Flo - I experienced something similar - we were able to check the box, but for some reason it didn't save the setting when we returned to the page. However, it didn't prevent us from using the printer without any problems. If you can't connect, I'd contact Pogoplug support, but you should be able to get it to work without issue.

Has there been an answer to the greyed out box to enable printer discovery? It won't see a printer directly connected.

September 2, 2010 1:04 PM

Same problem with mine. I woke up and saw I had firmware 2.5 so I was excited to try the printing feature. The check box to enable printer discovery is unable to be checked.

September 2, 2010 6:51 PM

I contacted Support for the Grayed out Box and they said it wasn't implemented yet. I'm running UI 2.5 and System 2.5. They said to give it a week

So, it's September 5 and my settings through my.pogoplug.com page still say firmware 2.1.2. Any idea how much longer before the rest of us will get the upgrade?

September 5, 2010 11:56 AM

I thought the firmware upgrade was going out last week? All 3 of my pogoplugs are still at 2.1.2

September 6, 2010 11:01 AM

Ugh! Where is my 2.5 update?

September 6, 2010 3:17 PM

When will 2.5 update be issued to the Pogoplug users....

It's September 10th and I still have the issue with the disabled checkbox. But I do have the 2.5 update so I can't complain to much. Don't know whats up with the disabled checkbox but hope it gets cleared up soon.

I am frustrated by Pogoplug as well. I can't believe a company sells
its features before actually delivering them. Like buying a bottle of beer
with just water in it and a label saying the beer will come in a fortnight.

My guess (as a Linux hacker) is that the plug needs a firmware upgrade to get
the printer features, and also the wireless, working. You might have a nice new
2.5 GUI in your web page, but you really need to see a firmware version greater
than 2.1.2. I wish Pogoplug was more honest in their announcements. It won't
take much for a competitor to take their business away. There are many alternatives!

Hi everybody, the issue is indeed the firmware update. It's still rolling out to users - I know that this has been mentioned in several threads on the community and Cloud Engines representatives have responded personally in many of them.

If you still haven't received the update, try contacting Pogoplug support. They're doing everything they can to get everyone up and running!

How many Pink Pogoplugs have been sold ???

September 28, 2010 12:17 AM

The printer option finally became enabled for me today.
I immediately tried enabling remote printing and sent it an email.
Got immediate confirmation that it was printed successfully but nothing printed.

I quickly went back to double check everything and thats when I noticed (read the small print) that it's the ATTACHMENT that gets printed. Duh!

Once I emailed in a real doc attached it all worked.
Magic!

I have a fairly new Lexmark Inkjet and a Dell Color Laser printer. Both are not recognized by Pogoplug Biz. Qn:
1. How can these printers be supported?
2. If not, how can I request to get them supported?
3. Can I set printing preferences for these printers?
4. On my next printer purchase, what network or I/O protocol features do I have to look out for such that it can be supported by Pogoplug Biz?

Thanks!

November 12, 2010 3:30 PM

Is there a list somewhere of the file types that can be printed (eg: .pdf, .doc, .jpg, etc.)?

November 17, 2010 7:45 AM

Brother DCP-115c not supported...
Can it be please added?

Thank you :)
