Review of Second Generation Pogoplug: Your Personal Cloud, Part Deux (Page 1 of 2)

Of course, here at Pogoplugged, we really love ourselves some Pogoplug - and gave the original V1 "brick" Pogoplug full coverage back in June.  At its core, the Pogoplug is designed to make sharing your personal files over the Internet simpler (and faster) than making microwave popcorn - all while keeping your stuff safe at home in your own USB drives.  For more information on the base functionality of Pogoplug, you can read the V1 review in its entirety by clicking here.

What's new, though, is the V2 Pogoplug, which ushers in a whole new form factor and is paired with several improvements to the web software and firmware.

When your new Pogoplug arrives, you'll find friendly and easy to open packaging, which is quite perky, professional, and positively pink.  (Shameless, I know.  But it had to be said.)

The Pogoplug is secured firmly in black foam, and comes with a small instruction packet (you won't need it,) an Ethernet cable, and a power plug.

So let's get this baby plugged in, shall we?  Setup is incredibly easy, especially if you already have a My.Pogoplug account.  It will simply recognize your new Pogoplug and add it to your list of devices, you shouldn't have to enter anything manually.

The V2 Pogoplug uses an entirely new and unique "desktop" form factor, a radical departure from the previous "brick" design.  The central core of the device is white, with the embossed Pogoplug logo on the side, and is wrapped in clear plastic.  A pink plastic cover envelops the front of the unit and wraps around the bottom, suspending the core unit above the "skid" and forming a cable management hole in the back.

Another major improvement to the hardware is the addition of several USB ports, rather than just one - this eliminates the need for a USB hub.  In total, you will get 4 USB ports:  three on the back and one on the front.  Other than the form and additional ports, the hardware inside is essentially the same and will operate no differently than the V1 Pogoplug.
