How To Import Pogoplug RSS Feeds into Boxee

Pogoplug offers multiple ways to share your data with friends, family, or co-workers - and I'm thinking that it's highly likely that the "share over email" feature is the most commonly used way to take advantage of this.  Super simple as it is to follow a link in your browser, what happens if you're wanting to follow a folder of pictures that is continuously being updated - and you need to be able to mark what's new or unread?

This is where the brilliant media RSS functionality of Pogoplug comes in - and it integrates not only with most of your favorite RSS readers, but also with media powerhouse Boxee.  Here's how to get your video, audio, and picture RSS feeds active on your television or media PC with Pogoplug and Boxee (note - this tutorial assumes you have basic knowledge of how to navigate the My.Pogoplug site and Boxee program.  For a refresher on Pogoplug's basic use and installation, click here.  To learn more about Boxee and download it, click here.)

Step 1: Share the Folder on Pogoplug and Generate a Feed

The hypothetical situation is this: you're on vacation and are taking pictures of your daily adventures, and since you don't have any time to blog, you want an easy way for your family (who lives in another country) to follow your newest photos.  They're not computer geeks, but are set up with Boxee on their media PC, as they find it easy to use and navigate on their television.

You're simply uploading your pics to your Pogoplug at home via your hotel's Wi-Fi connection and your laptop with Pogoplug Drive software.  So, how do you now get this feed to your folks? First, as shown above, you'll need to navigate to the folder you'd like to share, in the My.Pogoplug interface, and click on the "Sharing" button.

Next, as shown in the photo above, you'll need to first click on the "Share this folder" checkbox, then the "Publish a RSS feed" check box below that.  The Pogoplug will generate a custom RSS feed just for this folder - you can test the generated feed in your Internet browser or paste it into your favorite reader.  Copy this feed onto your Clipboard.

Step 2: Add the Feed to Boxee

Now, you'll have to import the RSS feed you have created into Boxee.  You can do this by navigating to the App Box, then by selecting the "My Feeds" item from the top menu bar.  You will see an option to add your own custom feed.

Input the feed URL you copied from the Pogoplug.  Make absolutely sure that you select what type of media is included in the feed - be it photos, videos, or audio.  In this case, I have added photos to my feed.

Step 3: Enjoy Your Pogoplug Feeds on Boxee

That's it!  You're done, how painless was that?  Now, you can share pictures, audio, or video via RSS to whomever you choose.  Via the screen above, you also have the ability to continue adding new feeds or delete existing ones that you have created. Once you're all set, all you have to do is navigate to the channel where your custom feed is located and play away!

I've been able to do this as well, but too bad there isn't a boxee app (yet) to make this easier. I have a keyboard for my boxee system, but typing one of those URLs with a traditional remote would be murder.

My pogoplug feeds are not working in boxee. Will be studying their support forum, but I followed above steps and my photos and videos don't actually show: an hourglass-like star begins, then page reverts to showing list of feeds. No actual content is visible. I am hoping to get this to work, esp. since Pogoplug won't play a list of songs when browsing--have to manually select another song each time, which is crazy way to stream music. Boxee seems like it could do music and photos in a more attractive interface.
