How To Back Up (Or To) Your Pogoplug With Windows SyncToy

I have been using SyncToy for Windows to backup copies of my other computer's files automatically to my Pogoplug. However, like any other backup tool, it requires you to set up what you want to backup, where to back them up, and how often you want you backups to take place.

Once set up properly, it runs seamless automatic backups.

SyncToy 2.0 for Windows is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center, here. The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.

To use SyncToy you must download it and install it first.  You must also have the Pogoplug drive program running on the computer you want to back up.  You can get that here.  I recommend you install the program and set it up to automatically start at logon.  That way, you never have to remember or worry that it may not be running when your backup starts.

Here are the steps I used to set up my automated backups.

When you first start you will be shown a startup screen. You will select "Create a new folder pair."

Click on that and you will be shown the steps  to choose what you want to backup.

Click on the Left Folder, Browse and find what you want to back up on your computer. In the case shown below, I selected my complete "J" drive.

Once selected, click on "OK" and then Right Folder Pair and Browse.

In my case, I wanted to back up the complete computer "J" drive to my Pogoplug's ST315003 41AS hard drive and the folder JServer Backup. As such, I clicked on it and then "OK."  If you want to create a new folder to backup to on your Pogoplug drive, just select "Make New Folder", create it, name it and select it.

You will now be taken to step two. This step asks you how you want to backup your files. I use Synchronize but feel free to look at the other options to see if they better serve your needs.

You will then be asked to name your folder pair or backup. Choose a name you will remember or one that makes sense for later. I used Backup J Server.

Just click on Finish when done and you will be shown a synopsis of your backup setup.

From this point you can decide to run it now, test it or save for later. I recommend you run it and make sure you don't see any errors that might cause problems once you have set it up to run automatically.

SyncToy does not have automatic scheduling, but Windows makes it very easy to set this part up.

See the instructions below on how to setup your SyncToy backup to run when you want it to.

Once done, you should see your task Wizard show you something like this.

Thats all there is to it.  You now have your computer automatically backing up to your Pogoplug, and a little peace of mind.

Keep in mind that you can also back up the files on your Pogoplug to a local drive or other location on your computer using this procedure - just select the P: drive as the one to back up!

I have also set up synchtoy. The synchronisation works very well but the photos synchonised using the tool are not visible when viewed through the Photo Library (message: there are no photos available) on my.pogoplug.com and are not displayed as thumnails when browsing the files (also via my.pogoplug.com). They also seem to load more slowly when clicked compared to files transferred using drag and drop.

Anybody else having this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Sorry - just found this thread that proposes various solutions:

Haven't found one that works yet though!

PogoPlug drive letters may jump on you. When and if they do you will have to delete your SyncToy folder pair, and re-create it to get them to work again.

When SyncToy loses it's drive target, it considers the folder pair broken and will not allow it to be used again until the correct drive path is made.

Yet another issue due to PogoPlug's drive letters jumping about.

Some users have reported success using the post here:

Version 2 of Pogoplug is better, and this Micosoft program seems to want to infect every single drive you may be using (including network drives), and the numerous legal agreements make me think that microsoft is spending a lot of money on legal agreements and unreadable complex legal mumbo-jumbo. I'd suggest that users simply get a copy of version 2 of pogoplug for backups that work in the background, and not this scheduled thing.

Just my opinion. even offering my opinion is apparently a violation of their agreements, to which I declined to agree by the way so they declined to infect my system with this toy, thank goodness for that <>

Thanks for the info on this "solution" but I'll bet you didn't read all the legal stuff, who could ?
