Cloud Engines Pogoplug v1 Review: File Sharing Made Simple (Page 1 of 4)

I don't know about you, but basically everything I have and do is digital - I listen to digital music, I take notes on my desktop computer, I have archives of digital photos, movies, and recordings - the list goes on and on.  So many people are looking for ways to bring all of this media together, easily, and get to it from multiple places.

Imagine any one of these scenarios:Cloud Engines Pogoplug

  • You want to share a 100MB file with a friend in another state, but don't feel comfortable using an online service to host it, nor do you feel like burning a disc and mailing it to them.
  • You're at a meeting and realize that you forgot your flash drive containing all your documents from home.
  • You're looking to sync files between home and work but don't trust an external online service to store them.
  • You want to easily listen to your music from any computer connected to the Internet, without having to mess with online radio sites that only work half the time or copying music to multiple machines.
  • You want to do any of these things but don't know anything about routers, networking, or online security.

Truth be told, there's a veritable cornucopia of contraptions out there that can do this... but they're often very expensive ($300 USD and up) and involve setting up port forwarding, security settings, dynamic DNS, etc. etc.  If you really don't want to bother with any of those things, raise your hand (seeing lots of hands.)  There's also a lot of online solutions to do this, but what if you want terabytes of space at a low cost?  What if you hate monthly fees?  Do you really feel comfortable uploading your sensitive, private data to someone else's server?

What Exactly IS Pogoplug?

OK, so you must be wondering where this Pogoplug thing comes in... at its core, it's an elegant and inexpensive solution to your file sharing and cloud computing needs.  Basically, it allows you to share the contents of any USB drive connected to the unit over the Internet.  The Pogoplug manages to offer a robust feature set while still keeping it simple.  You definitely don't need a degree in IT to set it up!  Eager to check it out?  Let's get started.

Pogoplug Unboxed

Cloud Engines Pogoplug

The Pogoplug arrives in a neat, compact box with only the things you need.  There's no instruction book needed, since the instructions are ultra simple... and thus can fit on the inside of the box.

The Pogoplug itself is about the size of a large wall plug and feels well-built and sturdy.  The unit can either be plugged directly into the wall outlet or hooked up through the included extension cord, as I have done.
